Illinois is a 36% underdog against Nebraska in tonight’s Big Ten matchup, and I expect a low-scoring game that stays Under the 50-point total.

My Nebraska vs. Illinois prediction for tonight's Big Ten matchup is for a rock fight, as the Cornhuskers bring an elite defense to Champaign and an Illinois unit that has looked improved over the last three weeks.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET tonight, Friday, Nov. 6, on FOX. Nebraska is a 4.5-point road favorite, and Kalshi gives the Cornhuskers a 64% chance to win outright. However, my top Week 10 college football picks back the Fighting Illini to keep this one close and the game to stay Under 50.5.

TOP PICK
Who will win Nebraska vs Illinois: Illinois +4.5

Is Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule focused on the task at hand? Or is he debating whether to step down? He raised the possibility of the latter after his family was heckled amid the Cornhuskers' struggles.

Some will say he's coping. Others will say the hecklers need to get a life. My question: is Rhule even worried about Illinois?

The Cornhuskers have lost three straight games, falling to Indiana, Oregon, and Washington. Despite those losses, Nebraska has still covered consistently, sitting 6-2 against the spread.

On the other side, the Fighting Illini have won three in a row, beating Michigan State, Oregon, and Maryland. Illinois has a better resume than the Cornhuskers over that stretch.

A 4.5-point spread feels too big for a Nebraska offense that can't find the end zone. Illinois is playable down to +3.5.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Nebraska has played at a quicker pace all season, but the Cornhuskers have struggled to find the end zone, scoring fewer than 17 points in each of their last three games. Meanwhile, Illinois has been rounding into form defensively.

Nebraska vs Illinois Over/Under pick: Under 50.5

For the Fighting Illini to keep this close, their defense will need to step up. Illinois is allowing 26 points and more than 386 yards per game this season. Over its last three games, however, the defense has held opponents to 21.2 points and 352 yards per game, a clear improvement.

On the other side, Nebraska's defense has been outstanding all season, allowing just 17 points and 280 yards per game. The Cornhuskers also own the No. 1 third-down defense in the country, permitting opponents to convert just 22.2% of their third-down attempts.

This is playable down to 48.

Nebraska vs Illinois combo

If Illinois can continue its recent success and keep improving defensively, the Fighting Illini should be able to keep this one close against a team whose head coach has floated stepping down.

Expecting both defenses to deliver, I'm backing Illinois at +4.5 overall and +3.5 in the first half, plus the Under 50.5, for a 4.98x payout that's well worth the sweat.

Nebraska vs Illinois combo

  • Illinois +4.5
  • Illinois first half +3.5
  • Under 50.5

Nebraska vs Illinois prop: Illinois first half +3.5

Backing the Fighting Illini in the first half and on the full-game spread at anything above a field goal is the way to attack this one. Both teams tend to start fast, ranking inside the top 60 in seconds per play over their first three drives.

Just three points separate the first-half scoring averages of these teams, too. If Illinois' defense can stay disciplined, the Illini should be in a good position to cover early.
