Our college football analyst favors SMU thanks to its steady offensive efficiency. Still, Virginia Tech’s explosive air attack gives the Over strong appeal tonight.

My Virginia Tech vs. SMU prediction backs Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings to extend drives when the Hokies' pass rush brings heat, making SMU laying the points my top pick tonight.

At the same time, Ethan Grunkemeyer and Virginia Tech’s aerial attack provide a viable path to the full-game Over, regardless of whether SMU secures the victory. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET tonight, Friday, Nov. 6, on ESPN, with Kalshi showing a 66% win probability for the Mustangs.

Read on for my free college football picks for tonight's Week 10 slate.

TOP PICK
Who will win Virginia Tech vs SMU: SMU -5.5

Play the SMU Mustangs to cover -5.5 at 54% or less.

SMU has a more reliable path to multiple touchdown drives than the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Mustangs succeed on 50.4% of offensive snaps, ninth nationally, and QB Kevin Jennings generates 0.31 EPA per dropback.

Virginia Tech's fifth-ranked havoc rate can wreck a possession, but it still allows successful plays on 43.4% of snaps. The Hokies can't count on a sack or takeaway to end every drive, and with Jennings' ability to avoid sacks, the task for a havoc-reliant team becomes much more difficult.

At the other end, Virginia Tech's ground game produces a near-negative EPA per rush, inviting SMU to put Ethan Grunkemeyer in obvious passing situations. The bye helps the Hokies' preparation, but keeping this within five requires them to disrupt Jennings repeatedly while sustaining enough drives of their own.

I expect SMU's offensive edge to produce a full-touchdown margin.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Virginia Tech ranks 114th nationally in opponent-adjusted defensive EPA allowed per play. Its disruptive plays have masked how consistently opponents can move the ball when the pressure misses.

Virginia Tech vs SMU Over/Under pick: Over 55.5

Play the Over 55.5 at 53% or less.

SMU's defense allows 4.58 points per opponent scoring opportunity, 112th nationally. That gives Grunkemeyer and Virginia Tech a route to points even if they can't control the game.

The Hokies have thrown effectively enough to threaten downfield, while SMU's defense has been better at preventing long drives than finishing stops once opponents cross the 40.

On the other side, the Mustangs produce explosive plays on 9.9% of snaps, eighth nationally. Their scoring doesn't have to consume much clock.

I expect SMU to set the pace and Virginia Tech to contribute enough through the air to clear this full-game number.

Virginia Tech vs SMU prop: SMU Team Total over 30.5

I like the Mustangs to score here and I'd play this to 60%

Virginia Tech’s havoc is a legitimate obstacle, but SMU has been unusually good at rescuing drives: it ranks second nationally with 0.57 EPA per play on third and fourth down.

Jennings can punish a defense that gets aggressive without ending the possession and he's hard to do that against. Tech also allows a successful play on 44.6% of opposing dropbacks, giving the Mustangs chances to throw through pressure rather than repeatedly challenge its front.

Kendrick Raphael’s eight rushing touchdowns give SMU a dependable option near the goal line.

Virginia Tech vs SMU combo

I like this combo because Virginia Tech should be healthier up front. James Franklin said the bye should bring offensive linemen Montavious Cunningham and Brody Meadows back.

Better protection gives Grunkemeyer more time to find Que'Sean Brown and makes 24 Virginia Tech points plausible without requiring a road win.

SMU can answer quickly enough for a productive first half, while the moneyline leaves room for the Hokies to keep it close. These are three distinct game-level markets, so check the combined price before you bet.
