Today's NHL Picks
The Panthers have held their opponents to two goals or fewer in 12 straight games and have a great opportunity to make it 13 when they host the Washington Capitals and the league’s No.30-scoring offense. Since the beginning of the calendar year, the Panthers rank first in expected goals against/60 at even strength while the Caps rank in the bottom third in expected goals for. The visitors are also without Evgeny Kuznetsov and now first-line winger TJ Oshie is on the shelf. Starting goalie Anthony Stolarz has been strong and has held opponents to two or fewer in four straight starts and 10 of his last 12 starts.

Elias Lindholm has been moved to PP2 while Rick Tocchet is going with two defensemen on PP1 as Filip Hronek will jump up on the top unit and play with his defense partner Quinn Hughes. The D-man is paying -105 to get a point, +120 for an assist, and a solid +365 for a power-play point vs. a Boston penalty kill that ranks 28th in hockey over the last two months. Hronek’s 0.71 points per game is the fifth-best mark on the team and he could be playing 25-plus minutes tonight thanks to the extra power-play time. He has just six points over his last 17 games which is why his point market is where it is, but this was a skater who had 29 points over his first 33 games before entering the Christmas break

The star forward has done most of his damage in the last two weeks as he’s scored in three straight games — a span which includes a hat trick against the Wild this past Monday — and in five of his last seven contests. Miller and the Canucks will likely go up against Jeremy Swayman, who’s in the midst of his worst stretch of the season for the Boston Bruins. Swayman owns a .900 SV% and a 3.37 GAA through five starts this month while posting a sub-.900 SV% in three of those games and giving up at least three goals in four of those outings. Put one of the league’s hottest scorers up against a cold netminder, and I like Miller’s chances to find the back of the net again tonight.

The Leafs star winger is currently riding a nine-game point streak with 19 points in that span. Of those 19 points, seven of them have come on the man advantage, and Marner has recorded at least one power-play point in four of his last five games. Meanwhile, the Avalanche have just three wins in February, and only one of those has come against a fellow playoff team. As for their penalty kill, it ranks middle of the pack at 18th in the NHL since the All-Star break. With Colorado ranked 10th in the league in penalties taken this season, that should give Marner ample opportunity to strike on the man advantage.

Colorado is 22-5 SU at home this year and doesn’t give up much on home ice ranking in the Top 5 in shot attempts allowed at 5-on-5, expected goals against, and scoring chances against. The Avs are allowing just 24.4 shots per game since 1/1 which is bad news for the Leafs’ shooters — especially third-liner John Tavares. The Toronto captain is playing on the third line and with the winning, that’s where he will stay tonight. His time on ice is down over two minutes since the move and hasn’t generated more than two shots on net at 5-on-5 in any of the games. He is still a cog on the first power-play unit, but playing net-front doesn’t generate a lot of shot opportunities, especially with Auston Matthews scoring at will. This price could fall with an Under tonight in Colorado.

McDavid is closing in on point-leader Nikita Kucherov who is eight points ahead of him. Since the All-Star break, McJesus has 20 points in nine games with 19 of those coming as assists. The former MVP has been shooting a lot averaging 3.44 shots per game since February 9, and the goals could be coming tonight. He’s put up 16 assists over his last six games and if 97 can start finding the back of the net, these multi-point games could be even more frequent. The Art-Ross hopeful has 55 points in 25 home games this year including 16 multi-point games and just one pointless outing. It’s chalky but McDavid to score two-plus points at -110 is still showing value considering his splits, form, and matchup.
