My BYU vs. Utah prediction and college football picks back Morgan Scalley to end Utah's losing streak to its Beehive State rival in what's being billed as the biggest matchup in Holy War history.
The Utes are 4.5-point home favorites, and Kalshi gives them a 63% chance to win outright. Kickoff is set for noon ET on Saturday, Nov. 7, on ABC from Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

TOP PICK
Who will win BYU vs Utah: Utah -4.5
The last time Utah won the Holy War was in 2019, but Morgan Scalley can end the drought in his first season as the Utes' head coach. This is the first time in the history of the BYU vs. Utah rivalry that both programs are ranked in the top 10, but only one of them has been surging lately.
In BYU's last two games — a loss to UCF and a shaky win over Arizona State — the Cougars looked like a team that shouldn't even be ranked. With reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin unlikely to play much in the Holy War, I like Utah to cover -6.5 or better. Our college football picks against the spread also lay the points with the Utes.
The Utes are the more well-rounded team, with a defense that ranks top 20 in points allowed per opportunity (2.70), success rate (39.4%), and third- and fourth-down success rate (37.7%).
BYU vs Utah Over/Under pick: Over 49.5
With BYU's defense looking flawed lately, I like the Over at 50.5 or better in this year's Holy War. The Cougars have hit the Over in three straight games, with their defense allowing 27.6 points per game in those contests. Our Week 10 Top 25 predictions also lean Over in this game.
Utah's offense is one of the best in the country and ranks top 10 in available yards percentage (59.3%) and third- and fourth-down success rate (54.7%).
Meanwhile, Bear Bachmeier and Legend Glasker should be able to lead BYU to 21 or more points to help this Over hit. The Cougars rank sixth in the country in points per opportunity (4.76).
Utah and BYU are averaging more than 400 rushing yards per game combined, and those dominant run games have helped both teams hit the Over in five of their eight games this season.
BYU vs Utah combo
Utah has been dominant this season, covering in seven of eight games, and it's one of just three undefeated teams in the country. It's also catching BYU at the perfect time, in the middle of an inconsistent stretch.
BYU has looked like a completely different team since upsetting No. 2 Notre Dame, with its defense unable to stop a UCF team using its backup QB and an Arizona State program starting a true freshman under center. Notre Dame hosts No. 1 Miami later Saturday night, and our Miami vs. Notre Dame prediction covers the other marquee game of the day.
The Utes average 33.8 points per game against Big 12 opponents and are set to run wild on this defense. I expect Utah to pull away late after wearing down BYU's front seven with its run game.
BYU vs Utah combo
- Utah -4.5
- Utah team total Over 27.5
- Utah fourth quarter -1.5
BYU vs Utah prop: Utah team total Over 27.5
With the backfield duo of Devon Dampier and Wayshawn Parker, and a top offensive line, Utah has scored 31+ points in six of eight games this year. Against BYU, I like the Utes to hit their team total Over at 28.5 or better.
Utah has one of the most efficient offenses in college football, and it rarely squanders opportunities. The Utes are seventh in offensive success rate (50.4%) and 17th in points per opportunity (4.53).
The Cougars have ultra-aggressive linebackers that Utah offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven will take advantage of with his misdirection-heavy offense. This is a bad matchup for BYU's defense.
