Our Oregon vs. Illinois prediction breaks down Saturday's Big Ten clash at Gies Memorial Stadium, where the Ducks return for the first time since 1993. Oregon enters as a 9.5-point favorite, with the total set at 50.5 for the 3 p.m. ET kickoff.

With both teams missing their starting quarterbacks, Oregon's superior depth and defense could prove decisive. My picks also target a low-scoring contest and Illinois' potential for a strong start.

Who will win Oregon vs Illinois today? Pick: Oregon -9.5

I lean toward the Oregon Ducks -9.5 and would play them up to -10.5. Oregon has the talent and depth to overcome its offensive injuries, but I can't say the same about the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Oregon's defense has stepped up significantly since losing starting quarterback Dante Moore to a concussion against USC. The Ducks have allowed just 29 points over their last two games.

Meanwhile, Illinois ranks 15th out of 18 Big Ten teams in points allowed per game. The Fighting Illini surrendered 31 points in regulation two weeks ago against a Michigan State team that ranks last in the conference in scoring. TOP PICK
Oregon vs Illinois Over/Under pick: Under 50.5

At 50.5, I'd play the Under down to 49.5 for a straightforward reason: neither team will have its starting quarterback, Oregon is also missing its leading receiver, and the Ducks have the best defensive unit on the field.

Illinois true freshman backup quarterback Michael Clayton II was outstanding in relief against Michigan State two weeks ago, but facing an Oregon defense that has had a full week to prepare for him is a much tougher assignment.

Meanwhile, Oregon's offense has been abysmal since losing Moore. The Ducks have scored just 32 combined points over their last two games and made midgame quarterback changes in both contests.

With both offenses compromised at quarterback, I expect a heavier emphasis on the running game, fewer explosive plays, and a game script that favors the Under.

Covers COVERS INTEL: On top of Moore's absence, Oregon will be without leading receiver Evan Stewart today. Illinois will also be without starting quarterback Katin Houser, who ranks fifth in the Big Ten in passer efficiency rating.

Oregon vs Illinois combo

Illinois can land the first punch, and Oregon can pull away late.

The Fighting Illini are rested, playing at home, and should have the better early-game script. But the Ducks have the deeper roster and stronger defense. If Illinois hangs around for a quarter, Oregon should have enough talent to take control as the game progresses.

Give me a fast start from Illinois, followed by an Oregon takeover in a game that never opens up offensively.

Oregon vs Illinois combo

  • Oregon -9.5
  • Under 50.5
  • Illinois +2.5 first quarter

Oregon vs Illinois prop: Illinois +2.5 first quarter

This is more of a combo leg than a standalone pick because it goes against my Oregon full-game prediction. However, taking Illinois +2.5 in the first quarter boosts the potential payout while fitting nicely with my full-game Under.

More importantly, Oregon ranks 105th nationally in first-quarter points per game, while Illinois ranks 22nd.

The situational spot favors the Fighting Illini early, too. Illinois is coming off a bye, giving it extra time to prepare and script its opening possessions, while Oregon must travel across two time zones.

Illinois can start fast without preventing the more talented Ducks from taking control later.
