Utah has the better defense, but its passing game could be what separates these teams. Houston allowed 499 yards against Oklahoma State and now faces Devon Dampier without nose guard De’Marion Thomas or linebacker Jaden Yates. Those absences give the Cougars less room for error when Utah mixes its running game with throws into the space behind the linebackers. The Utes must also replace starting guard Kelvin Obot, so clean protection is no given. Rob Paul backs Utah -6.5 in his Houston vs. Utah prediction, and our 13-point margin leaves a much larger cushion on the spread than on the total.

Holding Houston to 22 points is the toughest part of this forecast. Weigman just threw for 343 yards and five touchdowns, and the Cougars have scored at least 26 in every game. Utah is also without cornerback JC Hart, adding a concern against a receiving group with multiple scoring threats. Weigman’s legs offer another way to extend possessions: JD Yonke highlights that rushing upside in his Houston vs. Utah prop picks. The Utes need to make Houston earn its yards in small chunks and force field goals. A few quick touchdowns would put pressure on both our projected margin and the 57-point total.

How our college football AI predictions work

Our college football AI predictions use a custom Bayesian score model built from historical game results, separate offensive and defensive team ratings, home-field effects, and college football scoring patterns. The matchup analysis adds context from current team statistics, injuries, and recent results.

Score projections are generated independently of market prices. We compare each projected score with the full-game spread and total to determine our picks. Kalshi percentages are market purchase quotes, separate from the model’s forecasts; the two sides may not add to exactly 100%.

A narrow difference between a projected score and a market line is a lean, not a guarantee of an edge.

Odds and market lines are correct at the time of publishing and are subject to change.
