Can Syracuse's offense keep pace with a surging North Carolina team riding back-to-back outright road victories, or will the Tar Heels continue their winning ways?

Coming off back-to-back outright road wins as short underdogs, the Tar Heels could be in line for a letdown with Miami looming next weekend. That opens the door for Syracuse to keep this one competitive.

My Syracuse vs. North Carolina prediction backs the Orange to cover in tonight's ACC showdown at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill. Kickoff is today at 7:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network, and the lines on Kalshi have North Carolina favored by 9.5 with the total at 46.5.

Here's why I'm backing Syracuse in my latest college football picks. For more Week 8 plays, see our Week 8 college football top picks and Brad Powers' Week 8 predictions.

Who will win Syracuse vs North Carolina today? Pick: Syracuse +9.5

Obviously, I wish we could snag the key number of +10, but the Syracuse Orange should be good for it. They've done a great job keeping games interesting as hefty underdogs. In their last two games, they are 0-2 straight up but 2-0 against the spread as double-digit underdogs against Louisville and Virginia.

The Orange are catching the North Carolina Tar Heels at a great time, coming off back-to-back outright wins as slight road underdogs against Duke and Pitt. This also sets up as a potential letdown spot for the Tar Heels, with Miami (Fla.) looming the following week.

After those two wins, North Carolina could be looking ahead to the Hurricanes, making this a potential sandwich spot.

Playable down to +9. For more spread plays, see our college football Week 8 picks against the spread.

Covers COVERS INTEL: North Carolina hasn't faced a team that plays at this tempo since Sept. 19, when the Tar Heels lost on the road to Clemson. The Tigers rank 27th in seconds per play, just one spot ahead of Syracuse at 28th.

TOP PICK
Syracuse vs North Carolina Over/Under pick: Over 46.5

Despite Bill Belichick coaching North Carolina and the Tar Heels' defense being the highlight of this team, points should be scored in this matchup. The Orange like to play fast, ranking 28th in the country in seconds per play.

With Syracuse likely trailing in the second half, as the spread suggests, the Orange should be playing catch-up. When trailing in the second half, Syracuse is the 10th-fastest team in the country. The Tar Heels are coming off matchups against much slower teams in their last two games, so this faster pace could overwhelm them.

As for the Tar Heels' offense, it should have no issue moving the ball downfield. Syracuse is allowing more than 25 points and 330 yards per game, giving North Carolina a favorable matchup on that side of the ball.

Playable up to 48. For more totals, see our college football Week 8 Over/Under picks.

Syracuse vs North Carolina combo

Syracuse has covered in back-to-back games as double-digit underdogs, keeping things competitive against Louisville and Virginia.

Coming off two outright road wins, North Carolina could be vulnerable in a potential sandwich spot with Miami looming.

The Orange's fast pace supports both Overs, making this three-leg combo appealing at 5.14x odds. With both offenses likely to move the ball, see our Week 8 college football player props and anytime touchdown picks for player-level angles.

Syracuse vs North Carolina combo

  • Syracuse +9.5
  • Over 46.5
  • 1H Over 23.5

Syracuse vs North Carolina prop: 1H Over 23.5

As mentioned, Syracuse plays fast, and it starts right out of the gate. The Orange rank 25th in first-half scoring, averaging nearly 18 points. The Tar Heels lag behind at just 13.4 points per first half. Luckily for North Carolina, Syracuse is also allowing nearly 15 points per first half.

If the Orange can go into Chapel Hill and dictate the pace, while the Tar Heels look ahead to hosting Miami on Halloween, the first-half total should be a breeze.
