Buccaneers vs Panthers prediction: Panthers -2.5
As expected, the line fell by a point after Baker Mayfield was announced as the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. I’d give 2.5 up to 55%.
Mayfield has been out with a dislocated thumb and will be wearing a special protective glove that the American League champion Rays helped the Bucs training staff to design.
There’s concern over Mayfield’s accuracy wearing a newly invented glove but of more concern to the Tampa offense is the absence of Emeka Egbuka, who leads the Bucs in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns. He’s been ruled out for the game, along with starting right tackle Luke Goedeke.
That will make the Bucs hard pressed to keep up with Carolina Panthers’ league leading offense.
COVERS INTEL: The Panthers and Bryce Young both lead the NFL in passing yards. Carolina is second in total offense, third in first downs and fourth in scoring. This is the third opponent with a current losing record the Panthers have faced. They beat the first two—Atlanta and Philly—by a combined 59-17 score.

Despite the explosive offense, Carolina has been Under three of the last four games, thanks to a defense that has improved significantly from the start of the season. Tampa has been Under in its last three non-OT games and hasn’t cleared 20 points in four of five.
The Bucs are second in the league in run defense, which means they should be able to make the Panthers one-dimensional by taking away Chuba Hubbard.
While Tampa has been shaky against the pass, they have been able to take away the top receiver, allowing the Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase and Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb two catches each.
Solid defenses and offenses struggling should lead to an old-fashioned rock fight, and that means punts and field goals.
