Despite a 4-2 overall record, Clemson has been underwhelming this season, with no notable wins and brutal losses against the only quality competition it has faced. The books keep overvaluing the Tigers, and it's getting ridiculous!
My Virginia Tech vs. Clemson prediction backs the Hokies to cover in tonight's ACC showdown in Death Valley. Kickoff is today at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, and the lines on Kalshi have Clemson favored by 2.5 with the total at 48.5.
Here's why I'm backing Virginia Tech in my latest college football picks. For more Week 8 plays, see our Week 8 college football top picks and Brad Powers' Week 8 predictions.
TOP PICK
Who will win Virginia Tech vs Clemson: Virginia Tech +2.5
No need to worry about Big Game James (Franklin) trickling down his pants in this one, folks. This is not your older brother's Clemson Tigers team anymore. Sure, they're 4-2 this season, but they're 2-4 against the spread, and in this writer's eyes, they should be 1-5.
The Tigers' win over the Tar Heels is a little overrated. Clemson was up 21-20 with one minute to play before scoring a 34-yard touchdown. The Tigers could have run out the clock, and the Tar Heels should have covered.
Neither team has a particularly impressive resume this season, but Virginia Tech's biggest advantage in this matchup is that it has nothing else to look ahead to right now.
Following this game, the Hokies have a 13-day break to prepare for a road matchup against SMU. Franklin and his team can focus entirely on this week and make a statement against one of the ACC's longtime top dogs.
Playable at any number as a dog. If you're feeling frisky, take Virginia Tech to win outright, and see our college football Week 8 moneyline picks for more straight-up plays. For more spread plays, see our college football Week 8 picks against the spread.

Virginia Tech vs Clemson Over/Under pick: Under 48.5
The question is how well Clemson can move the ball in this matchup. The Tigers are averaging just 22.3 points per game this season and have leaned more heavily on their ground game, averaging 36 rushing attempts per game.
That ground attack will face a Virginia Tech defense allowing just 102.7 rushing yards per game, ranking 17th nationally. The Hokies are also giving up just 24 points per game this season.
Virginia Tech's offense likes to come out of the gate fast, ranking 34th in seconds per play over its first three drives. However, the Hokies are relatively slow overall, ranking 71st in situation-adjusted pace.
The Hokies should be able to keep this subpar Tigers offense in check from start to finish, keeping the total below 48.5.
Do not take this below 48.5. For more totals, see our college football Week 8 Over/Under picks.
Virginia Tech vs Clemson combo
Virginia Tech comes out firing, averaging 24.4 first-half points, making the Hokies +2.5 and first-half +1.5 appealing.
Meanwhile, Clemson's awful offense averages just 22.3 points per game and faces a Virginia Tech defense allowing only 87.4 rushing yards per game.
That combination makes the Under 48.5 worth targeting at 5.17x. With Clemson leaning on the run, see our Week 8 college football player props and anytime touchdown picks for player-level angles.

Virginia Tech vs Clemson prop: VA Tech 1H +1.5
Clemson has struggled against quality opponents this season and over the past few years, which spells trouble against a Virginia Tech team that comes out firing early.
The Hokies don't just start fast; they score efficiently, ranking 12th nationally with an average of 21 first-half points. Meanwhile, Clemson allows nearly 16 points in the first half while averaging just 8.2 of its own. It smells like the home favorite could trail at halftime.
