Chiefs touchdown pick: Rashee Rice
Week 8 is with us, and Rashee Rice is back suiting up for the Kansas City Chiefs, having missed the past two games. Despite missing a third of his team’s games this season, he’s still tied for the second-most red-zone targets on his team, behind Kenneth Walker III.
The Chiefs have relied on their running game recently, and the return of Rice gives them a chance to open it up more.
He hasn’t scored since the opening game of the season, but he’s a big-bodied receiver and has consistently been somebody that Patrick Mahomes looks for when the team is in the red zone.
He scored six total touchdowns in eight games last year and has shown time and again that he’s hugely dangerous when he can actually get on the field.
Broncos touchdown pick: Jonah Coleman
After returning last week from a stint on injured reserve, Jonah Coleman has already shown that he’s the best running back in a crowded Denver Broncos RB corps.
While the rookie was sidelined, neither RJ Harvey nor J.K. Dobbins managed to establish himself as the No. 1 back, and it was notable how good Coleman looked in that comeback game.
He led the RB corps in snaps, playing roughly half of Denver’s offensive snaps. He led the running backs in rushing, averaging an impressive 6.0 yards per carry.
His role is only likely to increase this week, especially with Harvey now on injured reserve, and Sean Payton, who loved him during the draft process, will continue to feature him, making him a strong value play here.
First touchdown scorer pick: Kenneth Walker III
Death, taxes, and Walker finding the end zone. He’s now scored eight touchdowns in six games, scoring in 67% of his appearances as a Chief. This is a strong Broncos defense, but it has still allowed six touchdowns to opposing running backs this season.
We’ve seen Walker score the first touchdown in two of his six games so far this season, and his team has leaned heavily on the ground game. Walker had a season-low 18 touches last week as his team was blown out by the Seattle Seahawks.
Don’t forget that Walker also has two receiving touchdowns, so he can be a threat in the passing game.
Long-shot touchdown pick: Noah Gray
Travis Kelce is one of the greatest tight ends of the modern era and a Chiefs legend, but Noah Gray is starting to show why he’s a valuable part of this offense. He’s not on the field every play, but his role is growing.
He’s had three targets in each of the past four games and is only one target behind Kelce in the red zone. Interestingly, he’s actually been targeted more than his superstar tight end partner when the team is inside the 10-yard line, with Mahomes looking for his 6-foot-3 frame as a potential mismatch.
It’s also worth considering that the Broncos have allowed four TDs on 43 receptions by tight ends this season.
Chiefs vs. Broncos touchdown combo
The two running backs are set to lead their teams in carries, and both carry a threat not only on the ground but also in the passing game. Walker has a bell cow's workload and has already shown this season he can score.
On the other hand, Coleman is still fairly unproven but has shown he has Payton's trust and, on his return, has more juice than both Harvey and Dobbins.
