Auburn may look like an attractive home dog following last week's upset, but our LSU vs. Auburn prediction prioritize the macro-level mismatch.
LSU's defense and net EPA profile lead the nation, whereas Auburn's offense is forced to operate through Byrum Brown carrying the load solo.
Check out why we're laying the points with LSU and locking in the Under for Saturday's matchup in our latest college football picks for Week 8.
Who will win LSU vs Auburn: LSU -7.5
I would play the LSU Tigers to 50%.
Last week’s win over the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs absolutely raises the Auburn Tigers' ceiling, but it took 26 Byrum Brown carries and three Gunner Stockton turnovers to pull it off. Additionally, Auburn is coming off one of its biggest wins in recent memory. I'm not here to tell you that LSU is a better football team than Georgia, but its profile may be more suitable for this matchup.
The visitors sit No. 1 nationally in opponent-adjusted net EPA per play at +0.44, while Auburn is 35th at +0.14. Brown is Auburn’s engine on the ground, yet he ranks 100th among qualifying quarterbacks in EPA per dropback. That's a dangerous imbalance against a defense that can crowd the box and still trust its coverage.
Jordan-Hare will have some real juice too, with belief injected into Auburn's season. However, LSU’s down-to-down edge should create separation over 60 minutes.

TOP PICK
LSU vs Auburn Over/Under pick: Under 51.5
The Under is my top pick in this matchup, and I'd play it to 49.5.
Brown is producing 0.41 EPA per rush, fourth among qualified runners, and a heavy quarterback-run plan is the best way to keep the game close. That also bleeds clock.
LSU’s defense has held opponents to 4.35 yards per play and a 39.2% success rate, while Auburn’s unit ranks 31st in adjusted EPA allowed and gives up 5.15 yards per snap. LSU’s offense is good, but its opponent-adjusted efficiency ranks 25th rather than among the elite.
Also, I still have not seen enough from Sam Leavitt to trust him to make game-defining plays. I don't think his head coach has either. LSU can control field position and reach the low 30s. Auburn landing in the teens leaves enough room for Under 51.5.
LSU vs Auburn prop: LSU over 3.5 touchdowns
LSU has scored 36 offensive touchdowns through seven games, and Auburn’s profile points toward repeat scoring opportunities. The home defense allows a 45.2% success rate, sitting 85th nationally, while generating havoc on only 15.8% of snaps.
Leavitt owns a 55% passing success rate, giving LSU an efficient way to remain ahead of schedule and avoid settling for long field goals. Trey’Dez Green’s removal from the injury report also gives Kiffin his 6-foot-7 red-zone target back. Auburn can make LSU work through full drives, but it has not consistently produced the negative plays needed to keep those drives out of the end zone.
LSU vs Auburn combo
The prevailing theme throughout is LSU's defense. It controls the game, wins the game for the Tigers, and keeps it low-scoring throughout.
That holds true early on, which is why I added the first-quarter Under to this combo beyond the previously mentioned two plays. I don't expect either team to come out guns blazing through the air due to decision-making concerns tied to the quarterback.
That's particularly true early in the game when the emphasis on either to score quickly is minimal. That should keep the clock running most of the first quarter and start off this heavily correlated combo out strong.
