My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs have gotten back on track since they met with the St. Louis Blues last Thursday.
The Blues, however, have gone in the opposite direction, entering tonight on a three-game losing skid.
Toronto’s offense was stymied that game — scoring one goal on 41 shots — but St. Louis has been outscored 13-5 since. In fact, the Blues are giving up a lot of quality chances overall this year, allowing the eighth most high-danger chances in the NHL.
This should bode well for the Leafs tonight, who’ve suddenly found their offensive stride, with Nylander being the most dangerous offensive weapon with three goals and five points over this three-game stretch.
Nylander’s sudden surge was sparked when he was greeted with a pair of new linemates earlier this week. He, along with John Tavares and Max Pacioretty, have dominated their minutes — winning 88% of them in terms of expected goals.
Moreover, they’ve converted on those opportunities at the highest rate in the NHL, averaging 12.64 goals-per-60 minutes while outscoring their opponent 5-0 over that stretch, according to MoneyPuck. The 76.9% O-zone starts help, too.
With the way the second line is being deployed right now and how well they’re performing, I like for him to continue his hot play and pot one into the back of the net tonight and extend his team lead in goals.
Another way Nylander could increase his odds of finding the scoresheet tonight is if the Leafs get going on the power play tonight. A date with the Blues could be enough to do the trick, too, as they’ve operated at a 73% rate on the penalty kill — ranking 27th in the league.
Maple Leafs vs Blues same-game parlay (SGP)
Nylander has three or more shots in six of his last nine games this season.
Additionally, the Blues are giving up the eighth most shots on goal per game this season (30.9), giving him ample opportunity to fire rubber on net.
Finally, I’ll finish off the parlay by taking the Maple Leafs on the moneyline. The Leafs are the better team all around and have righted the ship since the last meeting between these two.
The Buds should also be playing harder for their coach, who was fired by St. Louis last year. Craig Berube should have some money on the board.
