The Pittsburgh Penguins host the Philadelphia Flyers on ESPN to kick off Thursday’s NHL slate.

Pittsburgh has fared well when these two teams have met over the past few seasons, and my Flyers vs. Penguins predictions expect this trend to continue.

Read on for my NHL picks for Thursday, January 15.

Flyers vs Penguins prediction

Flyers vs Penguins best bet: Penguins moneyline (-134)

The Pittsburgh Penguins have won five of the past eight meetings between these two teams. The Philadelphia Flyers once again find themselves in a difficult spot on Thursday, as they enter this contest on the second half of a back-to-back.

With Dan Vladar having started the previous night, the Flyers are expected to turn to backup goaltender Samuel Ersson. Having a season to forget, Ersson is 6-6-4 with a .858 save percentage through 16 starts.

Entering this matchup in particularly poor form, Ersson has allowed five or more goals in each of his past two starts. He is 0-2 over that stretch with a .755 save percentage and a 6.00 goals-against average.

Pittsburgh holds a significant goaltending edge, given the recent form of Stuart Skinner. Trending in the opposite direction of Ersson, Skinner has surrendered just one goal in each of his past four starts.

The Penguins’ netminder is 3-1 over that span with a commanding .955 save percentage.

Not only does Pittsburgh own the goaltending advantage, but it is also the stronger team overall. The Penguins rank seventh in expected goal share, while the Flyers rank 16th.
