Clemson’s early-season struggles leave Dabo Swinney with urgent tactical adjustments to make, a task complicated by a 2-0 North Carolina squad that presents a formidable immediate test.

The UNC Tar Heels try to keep their fast start to the season going as they head to South Carolina to face a struggling Clemson for their first true road game.

With a new quarterback for the Tigers and a typical Belichick defense for UNC, my North Carolina vs Clemson prediction and college football picks don’t anticipate many points being scored in a Clemson home cover.

Two Hall of Fame coaches square off Saturday, Sept. 19 at Memorial Stadium in the noon kickoff on ESPN.

Who will win North Carolina vs Clemson: Clemson

If the percentage gets any higher for Clemson, I’d switch to giving up the 3.5 points and taking the spread, but for now, we’ll stick with the moneyline.

After struggling to 10 points in an opening loss to LSU and not moving the ball early against Georgia Southern, Clemson has a new quarterback. Freshman Tait Reynolds threw for 200, rushed for 29 and sparked the offense after stepping in for an injured Christopher Vizzina. He’ll get the start against North Carolina, although Vizzina has been declared healthy and could also play.

Clemson’s offense has been in the bottom five in FBS through two weeks, and its scoring is in the bottom 10, so the change was probably coming even without the injury.

UNC’s defense has been better than last year despite not having coordinator Stephen Belichick, who had been on leave and resigned two days before kickoff as the school wrapped up an internal investigation.

Covers COVERS INTEL: One of UNC’s top pass rushers, Melkart Abou Jaoude, is listed as questionable after missing last week’s game and being spotted with a cast on his arm. Abou Jaoude had 12 TFLs and 10.5 sacks last season and forced a fumble in the opener before getting injured.

 TOP PICK
North Carolina vs Clemson Over/Under pick: Under 42.5

This is an extremely low totals cutoff, at least three points lower than either team has faced so far this season.

Of course, UNC hasn’t come within 17 points of its cutoff in either of its first two games, so don’t let the low cutoff or high percentage scare you. I’d stick with it until 55%.

UNC quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. has been a game manager this season, avoiding mistakes and getting the ball where it needs to go. With Belichick more involved in the play-calling on defense, the Tar Heels have resembled his late Patriots teams, controlling possessions and winning low-scoring rock fights.

UNC has managed just two passing touchdowns this year and ranks No. 123 in offensive explosiveness.

Clemson has been even worse offense, getting just one passing touchdown so far and ranking 131st in explosiveness and 137th in success rate.

Look for field goals and general ugliness in this scuffle in Death Valley.

North Carolina vs Clemson combo

The game matches big-name coaches on both sides, and both men really need a win. Dabo Swinney has been questioned for his unwillingness to embrace the transfer portal, and a second-straight 1-2 start to a season could have his seat getting hot underneath him.

Belichick’s tenure at UNC may be stabilizing after a brutal first year, but the team is still embroiled in scandal, and he needs success on the field to justify the bad headlines swirling around the program.

With two great coaches both in need of a win, look for a conservative, run-first, clock control game. It won’t be fun to watch and could end 15-12.

We’ll call it 20-15, Clemson.
