There will be no love lost in this year's Magnolia Bowl between LSU and Ole Miss, as Lane Kiffin returns to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss., on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
The Tigers are a 2.5-point favorite on the road, and despite quarterback Sam Leavitt surprisingly showing up on the injury report, my LSU vs. Ole Miss prediction and college football picks are backing Kiffin to beat his former team thanks to a strong defensive performance.

Who will win LSU vs Ole Miss: LSU -2.5
Does anyone believe that Sam Leavitt is actually doubtful for this year's Magnolia Bowl? Ole Miss' coaching staff doesn't believe it.
Most assume Lane Kiffin is playing games against his former team, adding yet another wrinkle to the LSU vs. Ole Miss rivalry this year.
While Kiffin and Trinidad Chambliss are the biggest names in this game, the defenses should be the biggest talking point. LSU has one of the most impactful defenses in the country, ranking third nationally in havoc rate (30.2%) and Top 10 in both EPA per pass and rush.
And though Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding was Kiffin's defensive coordinator, the Rebels are lacking on that side of the ball. Ole Miss' defense ranks third-to-last in the SEC in havoc rate (15.5%).
With LSU's defensive advantage, I like the Tigers to cover at -3.5 or better in the No. 1-ranked game in my college football Top 25 predictions for Week 3.
COVERS INTEL: Both LSU's Princewill Umanmielen (10) and Jordan Ross (8) are Top 25 in the country in pressures, with the Tigers having more than double the pressures this season (48) than Ole Miss (21).
LSU vs Ole Miss Over/Under pick: Under 57.5
It's hard to imagine Leavitt actually missing this game, but even if he plays, LSU might struggle early on offense.
This environment will be insane as Kiffin returns to The Vaught, and between the Rebels' home-field advantage and Leavitt's history of sporadic play (26.1% pressure-to-sack rate, 4 INTs this season), LSU's offense could take time to get on track.
However, it's the LSU defense that should do the heavy lifting for the Under. The Tigers are ranked No. 2 on defense by SP+ and have allowed just 24 points through two games.
If LSU's vaunted pass rush pressures Chambliss, consistent scoring drives will be hard to come by for Ole Miss. I like the Under at 56.5 or better.
LSU vs Ole Miss prop: Ole Miss team total Under 28.5
LSU's defense is among the most talented in the country, with Top-100 NFL talent at every level, from Jordan Ross to Whit Weeks to Ty Benefield. Scoring on the Tigers will be far more difficult than scoring on Louisville, and against the Cardinals, Chambliss had to be nearly flawless to win.
The Tigers are elite on first and second down, ranking seventh nationally in early-down EPA per play, and nearly as good on money downs, ranking 13th in third/fourth down success (5.6%).
Even with Chambliss and Kewan Lacy, Ole Miss is 52nd in available yards percentage so far this season (51.6%), so scoring more than four touchdowns against this defense is hard to fathom.

While offense is the hot topic for the Magnolia Bowl with Kiffin and Chambliss, the atmosphere and LSU's defense could lead to a slow start that ultimately ends with the better defense winning the day.
If Leavitt's injury is real and he's limited, or Landen Clark actually plays, that should only help the first-half Under hit, especially with Ole Miss' defense not being overly impressive.
Kiffin's offensive prowess has also had a major impact on the Magnolia Bowl total in recent years. However, the Under hit in four of six matchups during his time at Ole Miss.
