North Carolina has been thriving as an underdog, but unbeaten Miami brings a dominant offense to Chapel Hill. I target the spread, total, and an early Hurricanes angle.

The U is favored by 14.5 for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Kenan Stadium, with the total set at 52.5, and the matchup offers a few ways to attack how this game could unfold.

My Miami vs. North Carolina prediction centers on whether the Hurricanes can justify a massive road number in Chapel Hill.

It's all part of our college football picks for the week's most significant games.

Who will win Miami vs North Carolina: North Carolina +14.5

As long as the North Carolina Tar Heels +14.5 stays at this number, I'm in and riding with the home side. Getting through 14 matters, but I'm more so fading the Miami Hurricanes rather than backing UNC.

Miami is 14-22-1 against the spread (ATS) in conference games with a -3.5 spread differential since hiring head coach Mario Cristobal in 2022. While Cristobal has built one of the nation's best programs, the legend Bill Belichick is a way better in-game manager.

The Tar Heels are also 4-1 ATS as underdogs this season with a +6.4 spread differential, including a cover as 21.5-point dogs against No. 5 Notre Dame.

At +14.5, there's enough cushion for me.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Both defenses do a strong job limiting explosive plays, while neither offense creates many. Per GameOnPaper.com, North Carolina's defense ranks in the 85th percentile in explosive play rate allowed, with Miami in the 74th percentile. Offensively, UNC ranks in just the ninth percentile in explosive play rate, while the 'Canes are in the 39th percentile.

 TOP PICK
Miami vs North Carolina Over/Under pick: Under 52.5

The Under on 52.5 is my favorite play of this game, down to 50.5.

We’ve seen Belichick’s plan against elite offenses for years: Make the unit slowly move the ball down the field, take away the best weapons, and tighten up in the red zone. Basically, bend-don’t-break defense.

That approach should lead to some success against a Miami offense that's been surprisingly poor at generating explosive plays. The Hurricanes should still control possession because they rank sixth nationally in success rate, according to GameOnPaper.com, but they also sit 115th in seconds per play.

And I don’t expect much from UNC offensively. The Tar Heels rank 97th nationally in scoring, while starting LT Jordan Hall and LG Andrew Threatt are both questionable.

That sets up a game with long drives, fewer possessions, and limited scoring.

Miami vs North Carolina combo

This combo is essentially asking Miami to control the game early, then let it get ugly.

The Hurricanes can come out sharp enough to cover during the first quarter before the pace slows and Belichick starts making adjustments. That still leaves room for North Carolina to hang around inside two touchdowns while the game stays comfortably below the total.

That’s the sweet spot here. Miami can land the first punch, UNC then keeps fighting, and neither offense turns this into a track meet.
