The loss to App State won't linger for James Madison, as the Dukes covering a 20.5-point spread against Troy is among our top college football picks tonight.

Fresh off a tough setback to App State, the James Madison Dukes return home looking to get back on track against the Troy Trojans in a Thursday night Sun Belt battle at Bridgeforth Stadium.

The Dukes enter as big -20.5 favorites, and my top Troy vs. James Madison predictions and college football picks expect Bob Chesney's defense to suppress the Trojans' ground game, setting the stage for JMU to cover the heavy spread in a low-scoring grind.

Let's dive into my best bets ahead of tonight's 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ESPN2.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Troy vs James Madison tonight: James Madison -20.5

This should be an absolute bloodbath, as James Madison looks to take out its frustrations after last week's loss to App State as a 12.5-point favorite. With a full week of rest, while Troy will be playing on just five days off, the Dukes already enter this matchup with an advantage.

The Dukes' offense is far more lethal, averaging 41.4 points per game while holding opponents to just 18.3. Against teams with winning records, Troy is averaging only 11.5 points per contest, and the Trojans have faced only two such opponents. Those teams averaged 30 points per outing. It's a small sample size, but it shows just how uncompetitive Troy's schedule has been, and the Trojans still can't squeak out wins.

The Dukes need a get-right win, and I expect them to take care of business.

This is playable up to 23.5.

Covers COVERS INTEL: James Madison doesn't take its foot off the gas until the final whistle. The Dukes rank third in seconds per play across their first three drives and eighth in situation-adjusted pace overall, compared to Troy's 104th ranking. Don't worry, they keep pushing even with a lead, ranking 33rd in pace when ahead in the second half.

Troy vs James Madison Over/Under pick: Under 50.5

The Dukes will likely be the only team contributing to the scoring. Troy's offense is very one-dimensional, leaning on the run nearly 60% of the time because its passing attack is one of the nation's worst. The Trojans average just over 41 rushing attempts per game, ranking 18th nationally.

James Madison's run defense should be able to shut this offense down, allowing just 3.4 yards per carry and 110.1 rushing yards per game (32nd nationally) this season.

Troy's offense will be relatively easy to game plan for this week, making the Under my look here. The Dukes should be able to move the ball with ease, but the total will still stay under 50.5.

This is playable down to 48.5.

Troy vs James Madison prop: James Madison first half -12.5

With how fast the Dukes are going to come out and how easily Troy's offense should be to plan against, James Madison will be able to jump out to an early lead in this matchup.

The Dukes rank fourth in first-half scoring, averaging nearly 25.1 points per game. Troy, on the other hand, averages just 13.2 points, and its schedule has been littered with struggling teams. This James Madison defense is going to hit the Trojans like a freight train.

Troy vs James Madison combo

The Dukes should come out swinging, build an early lead and keep their foot on the gas. Meanwhile, Troy's one-dimensional offense could struggle against JMU's stout run defense. I'll combo JMU -20.5, first-half -12.5, and the Under on 50.5 for a fun 5.76x sweat!

Troy vs James Madison combo

  • JMU -20.5
  • Under 50.5
  • JMU 1H -12.5
