Something doesn’t seem right about the current spread between the No. 18-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks visiting the Texas A&M Aggies.
 
SC has two losses in its last 10 games and is just a game behind both No. 4 Tennessee and No. 14 Alabama atop the SEC standings. Yet somehow, they’re 5-point underdogs against the Aggies in the college basketball odds — a team that’s dropped four straight and sits just 6-8 in the conference.

After back-to-back losses to snap a seven-game win streak — which included a 40-point drubbing at the hands of the No. 13 Auburn – the South Carolina Gamecocks got back on track with a 72-59 win over Mississippi.

South Carolina boasts the top defense in the SEC, surrendering just 65.1 points per game, which ranks 23rd in the nation. It holds teams to 42% shooting from the field, which ranks just outside the Top 75 in college hoops.

Both were on display against the Rebels, as SC limited them to 59 points, the ninth time in 10 games it's kept the opposition at 65 points or fewer. It held them to 33.3% shooting from the field, including a paltry 3-for-16 mark from downtown.

The win kept the Gamecocks from dropping out of the conference’s Top 4, which comes with a double-bye at the year-end SEC Tournament. They’ll now be visiting an Aggies squad that — since upending sixth-ranked Tennessee — has dropped four straight, alternating between close losses and total drubbings.

The Texas A&M Aggies dropped a 74-73 affair at Vanderbilt and a 78-71 defeat to Arkansas, in between a 100-75 throttling of No. 15 Alabama and an 86-51 smackdown of No. 5 Tennessee last time out.

The Aggies’ fifth-ranked scoring defense in the SEC was lit on fire by Tennessee, who shot 52.4% from the field and dominated the glass battle, outrebounding A&M 50-33.

Their offense wasn’t in any shape to help, as the Aggies were a woeful 18-for-66 from the field, a 27.3% clip, lowlighted by a 7-for-34 mark from 3-point range.

Perhaps the Aggies are favored because they hammered the Gamecocks in South Carolina in the most recent meeting, a January 2023 battle that ended in a 94-53 win.

The numbers don’t lie, though. South Carolina had won six straight before that defeat and has reeled off eight wins in the last 10 head-to-heads, covering eight times.

There’s also the Gamecocks’ added incentive of staying inside the Top 4 against a team that will likely need to make some noise in the SEC tourney just to snag an at-large bid.

We're tacking on a couple of Gamecocks to build this SGP, starting with the team’s leading scorer B.J. Mack. The senior forward leads the team in scoring at 13.9 points per game, but he’s in another gear right now.

Against Mississippi, Mack went for 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting, the fourth straight game he’s scored 14+ points. With his line set at 13.5, he should be able to get into that range on Wednesday.

Let’s close on the slumping Meechie Johnson, whose scoring prop is set at 10.5 points. Save for a 22-point effort against Auburn in the blowout loss, the junior guard has failed to tally double digits in four of his last five games, including a scoreless performance against LSU in 27 minutes of work.

With Mack doing much of the heavy lifting lately, I’m staying on trend with Johnson until he proves he can bust out of this funk.

This line has never dipped below -4 and has yet to cross -4, with most of the books settling in at the 4.5-point middle ground.

South Carolina has the sixth-best ATS record in the NCAA, rocking an impressive 19-8-0 record against the spread, including a nifty 7-2-0 as the road team – yet another reason why this line needs a double-take.

The Aggies, meanwhile, have only been able to cover 11 times in 27 games this season. They are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games.

The total opened at 134.5 but has climbed since to a high of 136, which seems about right for two teams that rank Bottom 4 in scoring in the SEC. Texas A&M does have a winning Over record at 15-12, including crossing the total five times in its last six games.

SC has seen the Over go just 12-15 this season, with the Under has cashed in five of its last seven contests.
