The Toronto Maple Leafs sit 26th in shot suppression and shorthanded time on ice, making this a perfect spot for Zach Hyman to hit his shooting ceiling.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers (62%) square off tonight in a star-studded battle between two of the league's highest-scoring offenses.

A leaky Toronto defense and undisciplined play set up a productive shooting night for Zach Hyman.

I'm backing Hyman for three shots as the headline Maple Leafs vs. Oilers prediction.

Let's take a closer look at my NHL picks for Saturday, Oct. 24.

Maple Leafs vs Oilers prediction: Toronto Maple Leafs +1.5

I expect the Toronto Maple Leafs to keep this game close, and I'd back them on the Puck Line at 63%.

The Maple Leafs rank eighth in goals per game, third in power-play percentage, and have scored at least four times in five of their last seven games.

They have flaws, but they can really score.

Conversely, the Edmonton Oilers are allowing 3.2 goals per game and will be without Devon Levi due to injury. That means Tristan Jarry gets the net. Among 58 goaltenders who have appeared in at least three games, Jarry ranks 52nd in Goals Saved Above Expected per 60 minutes (-1.0).

I don’t expect him to hold up against an elite offense, which will make it hard on the Oilers to gain separation.

Maple Leafs vs Oilers combo

I’m combining Maple Leafs +1.5 with William Nylander to record a point and Zach Hyman to generate three shots.

Nylander has points in 13 of the last 16 games in which Toronto’s opponent had a win probability of 60% or more.

Skating with Kirill Marchenko at 5-on-5 and playing a key role on a high-end power play, he will get prime usage in a game Toronto will have to score in bulk to keep up.

Hyman recorded 3+ shots in 60% of his home games when he played 20+ minutes last year, and he'll benefit from a pace-up spot against his former team.

Maple Leafs vs Oilers combo

  • Toronto Maple Leafs +1.5
  • William Nylander Over 0.5 points
  • Zach Hyman Over 2.5 shots

 TOP PICK
Maple Leafs vs Oilers player prop: Zach Hyman Over 2.5 shots

Hyman is a target for 3+ shots to 56%.

The veteran winger has logged 20+ minutes in three of four games since returning to the lineup. He recorded at least three shots in two of the three games seeing that kind of workload, only falling short against an elite shot-suppression team in the Hurricanes.

He has a fantastic matchup against the Maple Leafs. They rank fourth in 5-on-5 pace, which should help lift his volume.

The Leafs also sit 26th in shorthanded time per game. They take a healthy dose of penalties, and Hyman lives around the net on the league’s most talented power play.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Zach Hyman ranks first on the Oilers in xG per 60, and second in shots on goal per 60, while on the power play. That bodes well for him going against a team that ranks 26th in shorthanded time on ice.

Maple Leafs vs Oilers goal scorer: Zach Hyman

Hyman has scored in four of his last eight games against the Maple Leafs, and I like him to find the back of the net again.

He is skating with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on the second line and has reclaimed his spot as the net-front guy on the No. 1 power play.

He has averaged more than 3.0 xG per 60 on the man advantage and sits tied for 18th. The Maple Leafs spend a lot of time shorthanded, which should give Hyman plenty of chances to find open space around the net.
