The Calgary Flames are one of the league's worst shot suppression teams, sitting 28th in shots against.
The Detroit Red Wings (58%) are more than capable of taking advantage, and I'm backing rookie Michael Brandsegg-Nygard to be at the forefront with my Red Wings vs. Flames prediction.
Read on for analysis of my NHL picks for Saturday, Oct. 24.
Red Wings vs Flames prediction: Detroit Red Wings moneyline
I’m on the Detroit Red Wings to 60%.
The Calgary Flames rank 27th in expected goal share and 28th in shots allowed. That's why they sit at 3-6-0 despite Devin Cooley stealing a couple of games between the pipes.
He’s likely to get the night off after back-to-back starts, which would clear the way for Dustin Wolf. He has struggled mightily out of the gate, ranking 55th among 58 eligible netminders in Goals Saved Above Expected per start.
He will have nowhere to hide against a Detroit team averaging 30 shots per outing.

Red Wings vs Flames combo
Detroit has a significant advantage over Calgary in expected goal share, and the Flames don’t possess the finishing (32nd in SH%) or goaltending (29th in SV%) to compensate.
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard has recorded at least five shot attempts in two of three games against Bottom-5 shot suppression teams. He will have plenty of looks playing alongside Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond.
Raymond has five points over his last couple of games after an uncharacteristically slow start to the year. He’s attempted 7+ shots in four straight and is also a high-end playmaker, making him a real threat to find the scoresheet.
Red Wings vs Flames combo
- Lucas Raymond Over 0.5 points
- Michael Brandsegg-Nygard Over 1.5 shots

TOP PICK
Red Wings vs Flames player prop: Michael Brandsegg-Nygard Over 1.5 shots
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is playable for 2+ shots to 59%.
He has averaged 2.4 shots per game to start the year and was recently moved onto a line with Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond.
That certainly appears to be a positive as he has attempted more than 23 shots per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play with Raymond on his opposite wing. Those are high-end outputs.
The Flames sit 29th in 5-on-5 shot suppression and have played at the league’s highest pace, making this a perfect environment to highlight Brandsegg-Nygard’s shooting.
Red Wings vs Flames goal scorer: Michael Brandsegg-Nygard
We’re backing Brandsegg-Nygard to have a good game in terms of generating shots so it only makes sense to target him for a goal.
His shot output has jumped with Raymond on his opposite wing rather than Alex DeBrincat, who was taking a lot of the shots himself.
Brandsegg-Nygard also deserves more than he’s gotten thus far, scoring just twice on 4.1 expected goals.
Facing the 29th ranked team in save percentage will help his cause.
