The Carolina Hurricanes (53%) are in Edmonton to take on the Oilers in the marquee game of the night.
My Hurricanes vs. Oilers predictions believe Carolina should have more of the puck in this game, and Edmonton's ability to force outside looks sets up well for Shayne Gostisbehere.
I'm taking the veteran offensive defenseman for two shots with my NHL picks for Thursday, Oct. 22.
Hurricanes vs Oilers prediction: Hurricanes moneyline
I like the Carolina Hurricanes to 57%.
They lead the league with a score-adjusted xG share of 62.8%. No other team is above 60%.
I like their chances of tilting the ice against the Edmonton Oilers, who lack the same caliber of depth to truly dominate teams.
While both sides look the part of Stanley Cup contenders, the Hurricanes are off to the more sustainable start.
Edmonton’s 7-1-1 record is inflated by a sky-high 106.5 PDO (SH%+SV%). There's less substance in their play, so I’ll back the defending champs.

Hurricanes vs Oilers combo
I'm on Carolina to win as well as Shayne Gostisbehere and Logan Stankoven to record a couple of shots along the way.
Edmonton’s ability to bunker down and defend the slot should lead to more shooting opportunities on the outside. Gostisbehere leads Hurricanes defenders in shot attempts and points, making him the perfect candidate to take advantage.
Stankoven will see plenty of Edmonton’s second line, which has allowed more than 75 shot attempts per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play. They’re spending a lot of time in the defensive zone and nobody on the Hurricanes has generated more 5-on-5 shots than Stankoven.
Hurricanes vs Oilers combo

- Shayne Gostisbehere 2+ shots
- Logan Stankoven 2+ shots
TOP PICK
Hurricanes vs Oilers player prop: Shayne Gostisbehere Over 1.5 shots
I’d play Gostisbehere for 2+ shots to 58%.
He's attempted at least five shots in 10 of 11 games. For reference, he cleared 1.5 shots 76% of the time last season when reaching that benchmark.
He should have his fair share of looks against the Oilers. They rank fourth in limiting slot shots but sit 16th in shot suppression at 5-on-5 and 23rd while killing penalties.
They’ll give up some volume — just more from the outside. That perfectly suits Gostisbehere, who is somewhat of a rover in the offensive zone and will shoot from all over the perimeter.
Hurricanes vs Oilers goal scorer: Jackson Blake
Jackson Blake has piled up 5.1 expected goals this season but scored just once. His -4.1 goals below expected output is 0.1 back of tops in the league.
The important thing is that Blake is generating opportunities. An uptick in production is inevitable if the looks continue to be there, and they should be tonight.
Blake is in the perfect spot skating on the No. 2 line and top power play. He’ll see a ton of Edmonton’s middle-6, which is bleeding shot volume at 5-on-5.
He’ll also get exposure to Sebastian Aho and the team’s best weapons with extra time and space to operate on the power play.
