My Kings vs. Islanders predictions note that New York (53%) forward Brayden Schenn is generating shots and shot attempts at his highest rate in almost a decade.
An uptick in usage on the power play is a big reason why, and should be especially beneficial against a Los Angeles team bleeding shots while undermanned.
My NHL picks call for Schenn's shooting success to continue at home Thursday, Oct. 22.
Kings vs Islanders prediction: Under 5.5
I’d play the Under to 55%.
The New York Islanders have conceded two goals or fewer in four of five home games, allowing an average of 25.8 shots on goal.
The only hiccup came against the Lightning, who are off to a strong 7-2 start and averaging nearly 3.5 goals per game.
Pete DeBoer runs a tight ship, and I expect his team to put the clamps down on the Los Angeles Kings.
The Kings rank 27th in xGF at 5-on-5 and 23rd on the power play. Generating opportunities is a challenge, and they’ll have to beat Semyon Varlamov — who's been sharp in his first two starts — on the rare occasions they break through.

Kings vs Islanders combo
I’m combining the Under with Trevor Moore and Brayden Schenn each for 2+ shots.
Among Kings forwards, Moore trails only Adrian Kempe in 5-on-5 shots on goal per 60 minutes. He’s an efficient shooter and, playing on the second line, will avoid the toughest matchups during that game state.
Schenn has recorded multiple shots on goal in six of his past eight games. His presence on the top power play lifts his floor and ceiling.
Kings vs Islanders combo
- Under 5.5
- Trevor Moore 2+ shots
- Brayden Schenn 2+ shots
TOP PICK
Kings vs Islanders player prop: Brayden Schenn Over 1.5 shots
Schenn is a play for 2+ shots to 54%.
He is averaging nearly one extra shot attempt per game this season, which is a big difference for a player who is often in close proximity to the net — it’s easier to hit the target.
Schenn has attempted 4+ shots in seven of nine games to date, generating consistent volume. He cleared 1.5 shots in 86% of his games last season when reaching that mark.
A healthy chunk of his volume comes on the power play, where he trails only Bo Horvat in shots. That’s certainly a positive in this matchup as the Kings sit 26th in shot suppression on the penalty kill.
Kings vs Islanders goal scorer: Matthew Schaefer
I’m looking to Matthew Schaefer to pot his first of the season.
He scored 23 goals as a rookie and, despite the goose egg, has looked incredibly dangerous in the early going.
Schaefer is leading all NHL defensemen in shot attempts, shots on goal, and expected goals. He’s constantly tilting the ice for New York and jumping up to get involved offensively.
In a tight-checking, low-event game, Schaefer’s skating ability and constant activation could lead to an unmarked opportunity that makes the difference.
