Elijah Mitchell Odds and Super Bowl Props: Mitchell Makes Most of Limited Chances

Christian McCaffrey gets most of the attention, and the carries, for the 49ers. But there's still room for backup RB Elijah Mitchell to shine in the Super Bowl, as our NFL betting picks explain.

The Super Bowl is nearly upon us, and we’re looking at all the various Super Bowl props, in particular the Elijah Mitchell odds.

The 49ers running back might be behind Christian McCaffrey on the depth chart, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t money to be made on him in the Super Bowl odds, so let’s get stuck into our NFL player prop picks.

Elijah Mitchell Super Bowl prop pick

Over 1.5 rushing attempts (+124)

It’s not always easy to find worthwhile props around backups, especially when that player is second on the depth chart to the NFL’s best running back in Christian McCaffrey. However, there’s real value to be had on Elijah Mitchell this Sunday.

It has to be said that Mitchell has been unlucky with injuries this season. So far he’s featured in just 12 of the 49ers’ games and even then he’s been used sparingly with McCaffrey being the team’s lead back and best offensive player.

However, Mitchell is clearly above Jordan Mason on the depth chart and has had a carry in every single game in which he’s suited up. His rushing attempt line for Sunday stands at 1.5. The good news is that Mitchell has had two or more rushes in 11 of the 12 games in which he’s played so far this season. He also faces a rushing defense that is the weakest area of the Chiefs’ game, which should bode well.

The main problem is McCaffrey and just how much we’ll see of the former Stanford man. We’ve seen McCaffrey get double-digit carries in every game he’s played and he’s effectively a bellcow. In a game with the importance of the Super Bowl, it’s even less likely that the Niners take their star man from the field. That leaves us fighting for what may be minimal opportunities.

Despite that, I’m bullish we see Mitchell get the two carries that he needs to cover here. There are three ways we hit this mark.

The first is that McCaffrey gets injured, which given his injury history is certainly a possibility, but not something we can rely on. Then there’s the most likely option, which is for the team to need to spell McCaffrey and let him have some rest. Given the amount of action he’ll see in both the rushing and passing games, this is the most likely outcome.

Finally, we know that if the Niners build up a sizable lead, we’re very likely to see Mitchell deployed to pound the rock and eat valuable time off the clock.

Elijah Mitchell Super Bowl same-game parlay

Elijah Mitchell Over 1.5 rushing attempts

Elijah Mitchell Over 3.5 rushing yards

Arik Armstead Over 2.5 tackles + assists

Here’s our Elijah Mitchell-themed same-game parlay for you ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl, and it comes in at +425.

In addition to our best bet, we’re also going to back Mitchell to hit the Over on his rushing yard line of 3.5. He’s hit the mark in nine of his 12 games so far this season, including his past seven contests. One of the games in which he didn’t hit the mark was also the sole game in which he had Under 1.5 carries, meaning that only twice has he failed to rush for four or more yards when having two or more carries.

We’re also backing Arik Armstead to have Over 2.5 tackles and assists combined. The veteran is a key part of this 49ers defensive line and it’ll be crucial that he dominates the middle of the Chiefs offensive line and puts pressure on Patrick Mahomes as well as stopping Isiah Pacheco. He’s missed a lot of time this season but he’s hit this number in seven of 11 games, including six of his last eight appearances.
