The UTSA Roadrunners look to maintain their 4-0 conference record and stay atop the American Athletic Conference as 6.5-point road favorites when they head to Boca Raton to face the Florida Atlantic Owls at Flagler Credit Union Stadium.

While UTSA's pristine record looks great on paper, regression and defensive volatility suggest a high-scoring battle, making my top UTSA vs. FAU predictions and college football picks lean toward an explosive, high-scoring affair.

It all gets underway at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN tonight.

 TOP PICK
Who will win UTSA vs FAU tonight: FAU +6.5

I'm on the home team at +6 or better.

UTSA's 7-1 record is commendable, but nothing about the Road Runners' underlying metrics indicates tremendous future success. Close wins over Texas State (outgained by 83 yards) and Navy (41% postgame win probability) keep the dream alive, but for how long?

FAU's offense is humming. Quarterback Caden Veltkamp and receiver Easton Messer are among the top of the yardage at their respective positions and can capitalize against a UTSA defense ranked 89th in EPA per play and 129th in explosiveness allowed since Week 5.

Jeff Traylor's squad has notoriously struggled on the road, going 3-8 ATS in its last 11 conference games as the visitor, so they will struggle to live up to expectations against FAU's potent offense.

Covers COVERS INTEL: UTSA's defense ranks 136th in passing explosiveness allowed since Week 5, which won't hold up against an FAU offense averaging 359.5 passing yards in that span.

UTSA vs FAU Over/Under pick: Over 72.5

Taking the Over in FAU games is best practice until proven otherwise. The Owls are 7-1 O/U on the year, including a run of five consecutive Overs.

For all of the gaudy offensive statistics, the defensive ones are just as bad: 134th in EPA per play and 137th in explosiveness allowed in their last four games.

UTSA (sixth in rushing success rate) will get whatever it wants on the ground, so Owen McCown and this offense stand a great chance of reaching 40+ points for the third time in its last six games.

If a team is going to slow down this vaunted FAU passing attack, it's going to need to grade better than 62.4 in PFF's coverage grade (119th), as UTSA does.

UTSA vs FAU combo

For FAU to find the cover, it'll most likely have to rely on finding the end zone repeatedly.

Since the defense hasn't proven capable of getting stops, surrendering 48+ points in three consecutive games, a high-scoring game from kickoff to conclusion seems likely.

UTSA vs FAU combo

  • FAU +6.5
  • Over 72.5
  • First half Over 37.5

UTSA vs FAU prop: FAU team total Over 31.5

FAU has topped this number in four of its last five games, with the lone miss coming against a triple option team (Army) that limits possessions.

Those are the kinds of fireworks you can expect from a team with an offensive-minded head coach (Zach Kittley) and an experienced signal-caller operating at the fastest tempo in the nation (21.0 seconds per snap).
