Best Texas vs Tennessee touchdown picks
Texas touchdown pick: Cam Coleman
Longhorns junior WR Cam Coleman has a team- and conference-best four receiving touchdowns through his first three games. Coleman was one of the biggest pickups in the transfer portal this offseason, and he's playing like it.
According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Coleman will be covered by Volunteers CB Kayin Lee, Tennessee's lowest-graded starting defensive back. The 6-foot-3, 201-pound Coleman also has a four-inch height advantage over Lee.
Plus, Coleman gives Texas QB Arch Manning a big-bodied wide receiver who can win one-on-one battles and make contested catches when the field shrinks. If the Longhorns get into the red zone, I'd rather back Manning's big outside target than guess which running back gets the goal-line carry.
Tennessee touchdown pick: Faizon Brandon
Volunteers freshman QB Faizon Brandon's three rushing touchdowns are the second-most on the team. Brandon could be a better goal-line option than senior RB DeSean Bishop because he's 10 pounds heavier.
Even if he doesn't get a carry at the goal line, Brandon has the athleticism and explosiveness to break off a long run. The uber-talented Brandon was a five-star recruit coming out of high school because of his cannon arm and elusiveness as a ball-carrier.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel is an elite offensive mind, and the Volunteers have one of the best offensive lines in the country. When you combine those things with Brandon's scrambling ability, I love his anytime touchdown prop.
First touchdown scorer pick: DeSean Bishop
Volunteers senior RB DeSean Bishop is PFF's fourth-highest-graded running back in the country among 474 qualified running backs.
Tennessee could win the Joe Moore Award for the nation's best offensive line, giving Bishop one of the country's best run-blocking units in front of him. That advantage becomes even more important near the goal line.
As much as I like Brandon's anytime touchdown prop, I'm expecting Heupel to lean on his veteran running back during Tennessee's scripted opening drive. Bishop already has a team-high four rushing touchdowns this season.
Meanwhile, Texas' defense has been less efficient against the run than the pass, giving Tennessee another reason to establish Bishop early.
Long-shot touchdown pick: Jermaine Bishop Jr.
At this large of a payout, Longhorns five-star freshman WR Jermaine Bishop Jr. is the type of long-shot touchdown play I want in this matchup. Granted, Bishop has only four catches for 47 yards through three games, so this is more about explosiveness and upside than established volume.
He was a touchdown machine at Willis High School, catching 86 passes for 1,241 yards and 14 scores as a senior while adding four more touchdowns on the ground. That scoring production shows the type of big-play ability I'm looking for at this price.
Bishop also matched his season high with two receptions against UTSA last week, a small but encouraging sign that Texas is beginning to work the five-star freshman into the offense.
Texas vs Tennessee touchdown combo
I'm pairing Volunteers QB Faizon Brandon and Longhorns WR Cam Coleman to find the end zone (5.63x payout) because each gives his offense a different weapon near the goal line.
Brandon's legs are a weapon when Texas tightens up defensively, whether Heupel calls his number or the freshman creates something after the play breaks down. That rushing threat should become even more dangerous near the goal line.
On the other side, Coleman is the Longhorns' most dangerous scoring threat through the air. His size gives Manning a favorable option even when the coverage is tight. This combo gives me exposure to Tennessee's dual-threat quarterback and Texas' top receiving weapon.
