On a rainy Wednesday night in Miami, FIU's defense is poised to have the time of its life and make New Mexico State's offense timber.

Weekday CUSA is back, and Florida International is set to make history on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2) at Pitbull Stadium in Miami when the Panthers become the first-ever FBS team to wear a pink-based uniform against New Mexico State.

The Panthers are 6.5-point favorites in their newest Miami Vice-inspired uniforms, and my New Mexico State vs. Florida International prediction and college football picks expect them to live up to the old saying, look good, play good, on Oct. 7.

 TOP PICK
Who will win New Mexico State vs Florida International: Florida International -6.5

While I'd like to say I'm taking Florida International to cover -6.5 points, and up to -9.5, simply because the "Pink Panthers'" Miami Vice uniforms are beautiful, it's actually because of their ferocious defense.

FIU has one of the best defenses in the Group of Six this season, ranked 59th nationally by SP+, and the Panthers have allowed no more than 20 points in a game.

It's a terrible matchup for a New Mexico State team that's 98th in offensive success rate (41.3%) and averaging 18 ppg against defenses ranked top 110 by SP+.

Willie Simmons' team will need to score to cover, and luckily it has one of the G6's best big-play receivers. Maguire Anderson should shine against an Aggies defense that ranks 106th in pass success rate (48.6%).

Covers COVERS INTEL: Florida International's defense is top 10 nationally in available yards percentage (33.4%), and New Mexico State's offense ranks outside the top 75 (44.4%).

New Mexico State vs Florida International Over/Under pick: Under 47.5

FIU's defense held two far more talented offenses below 20 points, giving up 19 to South Florida and 16 to Florida Atlantic. And between the Panthers' defense and the Aggies' offense, I like this Under at 45.5 or better.

Even when the Panthers let teams into their own end, they bend but don't break. Willie Simmons' team is one of the best at limiting points, ranking 24th nationally in defensive points per opportunity (2.76).

But I wouldn't worry too much about FIU's offense, either. The Panthers rank 113th in the country in offensive success rate (39.5%), and New Mexico State is only slightly better at 98th (41.3%).

New Mexico State vs Florida International combo

Poor weather and poor offenses should lead to an ugly start. FIU has a massive advantage with its defense ranking top 20 in the country in net EPA per play, but Simmons' offense is ugly, sitting last in CUSA in points per opportunity (2.50).

But FIU's offensive approach helps their defense shine. The Panthers bleed the clock dry in the second half once they have a lead, with them ranking 18th in the country in average second-half pace per play with a lead (32.4 seconds).

Once FIU gets the lead, it will squeeze the life out of this game.
