Expert Week 6 CFB ATS picks
Iowa vs. Washington (-3.5):
Iowa +3.5
Washington was 0-4 ATS (and failed to cover by an average of 15.5 points in those games) before keeping it close against USC, and getting blown out by Ohio State isn't reason enough for me to stop trusting Iowa against other middle-of-the-pack Big Ten teams. Points will be hard to come by on both sides, but I give the biggest edge to Iowa's defense against a Huskies offense that's yet to reach 25 points against an FBS team and ranks 88th in yards per play.
Indiana (-7.5) vs. Nebraska:
Indiana -7.5
Nebraska has not played anyone with a pulse (yes, that includes Michigan State) and is getting a ton of credit for being 5-0 despite four of those games having spreads of -15.5 or more. The Hoosiers are starting to settle in on offense with Josh Hoover under center and just racked up 593 yards of total offense on Rutgers. I'd lay the points at anything under -10.
Texas (-7.5) vs. Oklahoma:
Texas -7.5
This line is begging me to take the points, but I can't do it. Oklahoma's offense was held to just 258 yards on 3.7 yards per play in last year's Red River Rivalry, and that offense may actually be worse this season, scoring just 12.3 points per game over its last three games and ranking 105th in total offense for the season. Texas has won the last two editions by a 57-6 combined scoreline and will make it three straight convincing wins on Saturday.
Ole Miss (-9.5) vs. Vanderbilt:
Ole Miss -9.5
Ole Miss has to stay on the road after getting smoked by Florida two weeks ago, but this is a golden bounce-back spot coming off a bye. The Gators ran for 303 yards in that game, but the Commodores won't be able to replicate that success considering they average just 3.3 yards per carry (108th) and 107.3 rushing yards per game (109th).
UCLA vs. Oregon (-12.5):
UCLA +12.5
UCLA has all the makings of a team that can win this game outright. Yes, Dylan Raiola filled Dante Moore's shoes nicely against USC, but UCLA's defense will provide much more resistance, ranking 15th in opponent yards per play compared to USC's 87th. On the other side of the ball, UCLA leads the nation in yards per carry and sits fourth in yards per play. Take the points.
Maryland vs. Ohio State (-33.5):
Ohio State -33.5
Ohio State's defense looked much improved in Iowa City last weekend, and with the Julian Sayin-Jeremiah Smith connection firing on all cylinders, this will be a wire-to-wire drubbing in OSU's favor. Maryland has lost by similar margins to teams nowhere near Ohio State's level (54-3 vs. UCLA, 48-23 at Nebraska).

LSU vs. Kentucky:
Kentucky +10.5
I'm not going out of my way to lay 10.5 points with LSU in a road conference game. I'm expecting a drop-off for LSU's offense away from home (which we saw at Ole Miss), and Kentucky has an opportunistic defense that ranks seventh in the nation in takeaways. Considering Sam Leavitt has thrown seven picks in five games and at least one in each, that could be the difference.
Georgia vs. Alabama (-1.5):
Georgia +1.5
Home-field advantage for Alabama is not enough for me to overlook the team with the more experienced quarterback and the better defense (10th in opponent yards per play compared to Alabama's 33rd). No team in the country is playing as well as Georgia right now, and that will bear out in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night.
USC vs. Penn State:
USC +1.5
I know I was just besmirching USC's defense a few paragraphs ago, but the Trojans at least showed it can contain a non-spectacular offense like Washington's just enough to win. Penn State's offense has been of similar caliber lately, with just 524 total yards over its last two games. Give me USC and its offense, which will once again be the best unit on the field.
