When it comes to the SEC, Southern hospitality is a myth. Football just means more.

Do not look for the Alabama Crimson Tide to give the LSU Tigers any space to rally following the firing of head coach Brian Kelly. The Tide would rather kick their rival while they are down.

My LSU vs. Alabama predictions expect the Tide to continue rolling, just as they have for the past two months.

Read on for my college football picks for Saturday, November 8.

LSU vs Alabama prediction

LSU vs Alabama best bet: Alabama -9.5 (-120)

An easy narrative can be mounted that the LSU Tigers should bounce back after Brian Kelly’s firing, that obvious albatross that was wearing on the locker room until it was finally resolved two weeks ago.

But the greater likelihood is that the Tigers have been just as distracted as the rest of us by the comedies of Louisiana politicians insisting they should pick LSU’s next head coach.

Frankly, the Tigers’ problems this season went beyond Kelly, even if they were primarily a result of his design and failures. A rushing attack that ranks No. 111 in the country in success rate, per CFB-graphs.com, has problems beyond play calls.

And an offense scoring only 2.17 points per quality drive, the seventh-worst finishing drive rate in the country, is hampered by more than a coach’s attitude.

Against the Alabama Crimson Tide, those failures should be embellished. The Tide are 5-1-1 against the spread since their season-opening flop at Florida State.

Quarterback Ty Simpson has become a distinct Heisman favorite, his nearly ideal accuracy elevating both the offense’s floor and ceiling.

With a chance at the SEC title game, Alabama should embrace this opportunity to kick a rival while it is down.

Knocking a rival into further disarray brings twice the reward off the field, while chasing a top-four seed in the College Football Playoff offers twice the reward on the field, as well.

LSU vs Alabama same-game parlay

Bet this rivalry game as if Alabama should win comfortably. The Tide should focus on short- and mid-range gains offensively. LSU’s defense is a liability on a down-to-down basis, but it typically limits explosive plays.

Short- and mid-range gains should come via tight end Josh Cuevas and running back Jam Miller.

LSU vs Alabama SGP

  • Alabama -9.5
  • Josh Cuevas Over 24.5 receiving yards
  • Jam Miller Over 52.5 rushing yards

Our deep-ball SGP: Jammin!

Cutting down on Alabama’s explosive plays should lead to cutting down on Ty Simpson’s yardage, even if the Tide quarterback is a distinct Heisman contender.

When Alabama has to worry about an opponent, like against Georgia and Vanderbilt, Simpson racks up the yardage. But when the Tide can coast, like against Tennessee and South Carolina in their last two games, Simpson’s numbers dip a bit simply out of a lack of necessity.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
