What you are about to read not a misprint. Iowa State, yes THAT Iowa State, will be playing in the conference championship game on Saturday.

You could have followed college football betting for decades and still not remember the last time the Cyclones were in this position, and the boys from Ames will have to earn it. The favored Oklahoma Sooners stand in their way and have won three consecutive titles since this game returned in 2017.

Let’s see if we will witness history as we give you our best college football free picks and predictions for No. 10 Oklahoma at No. 8 Iowa State. Kickoff is set to get underway on Saturday, December 19 at 12:00 p.m. ET in Arlington, Texas.

Against the Spread (ATS) Pick

Another year, another appearance for the Sooners in the Big 12 Championship game. Early this season, OU looked to be in serious trouble, dropping its first two conference games before ripping off six consecutive wins—but one of those losses was a 27-24 decision to the Cyclones. Still, this is now a vastly different Sooners team. Freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler has lived up to his high-school billing, throwing for 2,512 yards with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions. And though Oklahoma hasn’t played since a December 5 victory over Baylor, Rattler should benefit from coach Lincoln Riley’s game planning.

The fact that Iowa State is in this position in the first place is remarkable. The Cyclones have never won a Big 12 title. They never won Big 8 title. Their last conference championship of any sort came back in 1912. But their appearance is no fluke. Senior quarterback Brock Purdy was recruited to Ames with the idea that he could lead the Cyclones from the ashes, and he has. Purdy has thrown for 2,272 yards and 17 touchdowns this year. Iowa State has a more balanced attack than Oklahoma, and running back Breece Hall is a threat every time he touches the football, with 1,357 yards and 17 scores as well.

Head coach Matt Campbell has done a masterful job with this team, but I’m still not sold on them staying with a Sooners squad that is 5-1 ATS in their last six games as a favorite. Oklahoma knows what to expect in Arlington. The Cyclones don’t. I’m laying the points.

PREDICTION: Oklahoma -5.5 (-110)

Over/Under Pick

Like most teams that line up against the Sooners, the key is keeping Oklahoma’s offense off the field. The Cyclones should be able to do this better than most, with a balanced attack that can eat up some clock. The Under is also 19-4-1 in the Sooners’ last 24 games in December. That’s where the early money has come in, and it’s my play as well.

PREDICTION: Under 58 (-110)

Team Total Prop Pick

The Sooners defense was unremarkable at the beginning of the season, but this unit has quietly climbed to 16th in the nation. Oklahoma? A Top 25 defense? Nobody’s talking about it now, but they will be after slowing down the Cyclones on Saturday.

PREDICTION: Iowa State team total Under 26.5 (-101)
