A stout defense can often counter a potent offense, and the Raptors hope that will be the case on Sunday night when they look to end their seven-game losing streak against the Lakers, which dates back three years.

My Raptors vs. Lakers prediction is that Toronto will batten down the hatches defensively, redeem its worst showing of the season on that end of the floor from Friday, and pick up a rare win over a Los Angeles side it hasn't beaten since 2023.

The Lakers are slim 2.5-point favorites in their backyard for a 9 p.m. ET tipoff at Crypto.com Arena.

Let's dive into my analysis and NBA picks for Sunday, Nov. 1.

 TOP PICK
Raptors vs Lakers prediction: Raptors +2.5

Playable to 55%.

The Los Angeles Lakers rank second in offense at 119.3 points per 100 possessions, yet mustered just 95 points in 48 minutes in a 17-point defeat to the Golden State Warriors and their bottom-third defense on Friday.

Chalk it up to a poor shooting night (40% from the field) for the most efficient team in the Association (50.7%, 1st). However, against an incoming Toronto Raptors defense holding opponents to 103.2 points per 100 possessions (2nd), a similar cold spell will surely result in a third loss in four games for Los Angeles.

Easier said than done, of course, but Toronto's blueprint for success will be to make life as miserable as possible for Luka Doncic, the catalyst behind everything the Lakers do offensively. His 39.8 usage rate is comfortably first amongst players.

The Raptors have the personnel to pressure him into careless turnovers (5.2 per game, a career high), something they've demonstrated an ability to do as a team, forcing 21.4 turnovers per game (first in the NBA).

Covers COVERS INTEL: Toronto allowed 121 points to the Orlando Magic in Friday's NBA Cup matchup. Since 2024, the Raptors are 32-24 ATS in games immediately following a contest in which they surrendered at least 120 points.

Raptors vs Lakers combo

All good things must come to an end. Los Angeles has had Toronto's number for quite some time, but its reign of dominance feels like it's ready to subside, especially if the Raptors can take the rock out of Doncic's hands.

The two teams are a combined 5-6 in the total market. Whilst Toronto owns a top-10 offense, it's still scoring 4.5 fewer points with Kawhi Leonard (knee) sidelined.

RJ Barrett has faced the Lakers four times as a Raptor, averaging 25.5 points while shooting 58.8% from the field. He's cleared Sunday's 20.5-point line in three of those meetings and shot better than 61% in three as well.

Raptors vs Lakers player props

Raptors player prop: Scottie Barnes Under 5.5 assists

Play up to 60%.

The easy explanation here is that Scottie Barnes has yet to exceed 5.5 assists in a single game this season, maxing out at five dimes three different times.

A deeper dive into the All-Star forward's numbers shows he's taken on a larger scoring role without Leonard by his side, as evidenced by the career-high 41 points on 34 shot attempts Barnes just posted against Orlando. The 25-year-old's 24 points per game on 21.6 shots are well above his previous career highs of 19.9 points and 16.4 field-goal attempts, respectively.

Barnes ranks just third on the roster in assists (4.4) and potential assists (eight), both noticeable drops from his production a season ago (5.9 assists and 9.6 potential assists).

 TOP PICK
Lakers player prop: Austin Reaves Under 22.5 points

Play up to 65%.

After a scorching-hot start to the season in which he was contributing 26.5 points and shooting better than 57% from behind the arc through the Lakers' first four outings, Austin Reaves has cooled off considerably over his last two appearances.

He's averaged more turnovers (eight) than made shots (7.5), burying just 16.7% of his 3-point attempts to the tune of 18.5 points in 34 minutes of action.

Reaves will snap out of his ongoing funk sooner or later, but doing so against a resolute defensive arsenal from north of the border may be asking too much on this night.
