San Jose State quarterback Luke Weaver looked the part against a USC defense that was expected to be much improved, completing 65.5% of his passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Now, he gets an Eastern Michigan defense that allowed Sacramento State’s quarterback to throw for more than 220 yards while completing just 54.3% of his passes. The Eagles allowed 30 points and more than 410 yards per game last season, and while six starters return, this unit still has plenty to prove. If Weaver can replicate his success against a Power Four defense, the Spartans should have no trouble finding success against Eastern Michigan.

Oklahoma to cover the first-half spread is one of my favorite bets on the Week 1 slate, and I expect the Sooners to come out firing. John Mateer returns fully healthy after an injury held him back last season, giving Oklahoma a quarterback who was making a legitimate Heisman Trophy case before the injury affected his play.

On the other side, Brent Venables has another loaded defense, led by an extremely talented secondary and one of the SEC’s best edge rushers in Taylor Wein.

I expect the Sooners to control this game from the start and cover the first-half spread.

Alabama can dominate this game without the total ever becoming particularly threatened.

The Tide still have offensive questions of their own. Alabama ranked 125th nationally in rushing at 104.1 yards per game last season and produced just 48 rushing yards across its final three games. Russell is also making his first collegiate start behind an offensive line replacing several pieces.

That could keep Alabama from immediately turning every possession into points.

The bigger issue for the Over is East Carolina. Almost every meaningful contributor from an offense that averaged nearly 33 points per game is gone, and the Pirates now have to break in a new quarterback against one of the best secondaries in the country.

Alabama Head Coach Kalen DeBoer received a contract extension, but that doesn’t eliminate the pressure surrounding this program. The Tide fanbase remains restless after falling short of the standard it expects, and another sluggish opening-week performance would immediately turn up the temperature. East Carolina returns just one offensive starter after losing quarterback Katin Houser, its top two rushers, four of its five leading receivers, and several important pieces up front. That is an enormous amount of turnover before facing an Alabama defense that allowed just 297 yards and 19.2 points per game last season. Bama' also have an enormous talent advantage on the perimeter against a rebuilt Pirates secondary.

The market could be sleeping on Oregon's defense. According to ESPN's Bill Connelly, the Ducks are 11th nationally in returning defensive production and rank third in his defensive SP+ ratings.

Oregon's offense upgraded from last year as they look very strong at wide receiver and running back. This matches up well with a Boise State defense that's been downgraded. Whenever you have a massive spread, you need to look at the backups. I'd argue that Oregon has the best backup QB in the country in Dylan Raiola who was a two-year starter at Nebraska, so I think Oregon will continue to score if they're up big in the second half. On the other side, Boise State has one of the most experienced QBs in the country who should help contribute to the scoring.

Jeff Brohm has built a reputation for getting the most out of his teams in big games, especially against ranked opponents. The Louisville head coach is 27-15 against the spread with 20 outright wins as an underdog dating back to his time at Purdue. Florida State’s ugly performance against New Mexico State has me officially putting Mike Norvell on the hate list. The Seminoles allowed a Diego Pavia-less Aggies team to rack up more than 300 total yards, throw for more than 270 yards and convert 10 of 17 third downs. While some may chalk it up to a look-ahead spot, Florida State looked far too unprepared for me to buy it. SMU has plenty of tape on those early flaws and should have the talent to exploit them. Betting on a moneyline simply means you're picking the outright winner of the game, regardless of the scoring margin or total. If the team you choose wins, then your bet hits. Here's what it will look like over at your favorite sportsbook:

In this case, Alabama is favored to win the game as its moneyline odds have a minus sign (-) in front of the number. The favorites will have the minus sign present, and the underdogs will have a plus sign (+). Easy, right?

Spread

Betting the spread gives your bet a bit more breathing room. Here, you don't need to sweat out a team to win. Instead, you can wager on the point differential on the scoreboard.

Betting on the spread is a good idea when the moneyline profits aren't enticing. There's no point betting on Alabama as a heavy -1500 favorite over Missouri. But taking Missouri to keep the scoring margin within a certain frame will get you more bang for your buck.

In this example, the Tide are favored to dominate their game against Missouri, outperforming them by at least 24.5 points.

If Alabama does win by more than 25 points, that would mean the Crimson Tide covered the spread. But if the Tide won by just 20 points, then that would mean the Tigers "covered the spread" instead.

Totals

If you think the outcome of a game could flip in either direction, then an Over/Under is the way to go. This bet relies on the combined score from both teams and whether it goes Over or Under the point total listed at sportsbooks. Then, who cares who wins?

In this example, oddsmakers have set the total score for the game at 52.5 points. The choice is now up to you. If you think the Tide and Tigers will score a combined total of more than 52.5 points, 53 points or more, then pick the Over. If you're thinking otherwise, then bet the Under, and the bet will hit if they score fewer than 52.5 points.

If the set number was a whole number like 52 points and the two teams score exactly that amount, then it is considered a push and you'd get your money back.
