Euro 2024 Top Goal Scorer Odds: Six Players Tie For Honors

Dani Olmo entered the Euro 2024 Final as the betting favorite to win the Golden Boot with England's Harry Kane next in line. However, neither player scored in the 2-1 game and thus there was a six-way tie for the award.

It's not the name most expected, but Dani Olmo has played a crucial role in getting Spain into the Euro 2024 Finals.

Thanks to his winning goal vs. France, he led the Euro 2024 odds in the Golden Boot market before the final vs. England. However, no one ultimately came away with the solo win as six different players tied for the tournament's top scorer. UEFA announced before the final that the award would be shared between those players if a clear winner was not established instead of deferring to assists and minutes played as a tiebreaker.

Let's take a final glance back at these 2024 Euro Golden Boot odds.

What to look for in a Golden Boot winner

The Golden Boot has been awarded to the top goal scorer at the European Championships each edition since 1960. With any award-based betting market, it is important to identify the qualification traits of winners in relation to the progression of their team. In other words, what do the teams of previous winners all have in common?

Bettors would be wise to look at tournaments dating back to 1996 rather than 1960 due to the expansion of the format. Here are the qualifying baselines in the previous six editions of the Championship:

  • Average goals: 4.71 (five goals needed to win in five of seven events).
  • All winners have played for teams that reach at least the semifinals.
  • Three of seven winners have played for the team that won the tournament.
  • Six of seven winners have been on teams at odds of 10/1 or less to begin the tournament.

In summary, when looking for a top goal scorer bet, seek a player who can score at least five goals from a team priced at odds of 8/1 or less that can be projected to make at least the semifinals.

Best bets for top goal scorer

Two players stand out which fit the above criteria:

Harry Kane (+650)

"To be the man, you have to score the goals that take\ your country to a second straight Euro Finals" — or something like that.

Harry Kane has long been the man for England and with the talent and quality the Three Lions possess all over the pitch, the time is now for them to roar loud and taste glory in Germany.

Much was made of Kane's titleless debut season for Bayern Munich, but the No. 9 found the back of the net plenty. He scored 36 times in 32 league matches and added another eight in 12 Champions League fixtures.

He's in form, and for his country, he notched eight goals in eight Euro qualifiers. Kane averages 0.69 goals per match for England which would project him at 4.87 (right at the historical average to win the award).

However, it's been anything but smooth sailing for the English striker, as he's netted just once in three group-stage games.

Cristiano Ronaldo (+900)

If you've seen very little of Cristiano Ronaldo after his move to Al Nassr, don't worry, you're not alone. However, I am here to tell you that Ronaldo, at the young age of 39, is still scoring goals for fun.

Yes, a case can be made that it's the Saudi League and that the competition level is not quite up to par with Europe, but there's no denying the man's ability to put the ball in the back of the net. And Portugal is going to need that from him if they are to make a deep run in this tournament.

Ronaldo netted 10 times in nine Euro qualifiers for Portugal and is averaging 0.62 goals per game for his country which would project him for 4.34 goals if Portugal made the finals (just off the historical average).

It should also be noted that he's the all-time goal-scoring leader for men's international competition with 128. He's been around long enough, and he's still effective.

However, while the shots have been there, he's not yet found the back of the net and his odds have lengthened accordingly.

Top goal scorer market explained

The Euro 2024 top goal scorer market is a futures market where you're simply betting on which player will win the Golden Boot award by leading the tournament in goals scored. All matches played in the tournament count towards a player's goal total. Goals scored in penalty shootouts do not.

What happens if it's a tie?

If two or more players are tied for the goal-scoring lead at the end of the tournament, the market will result in a dead heat. This means the amount you were set to win will be divided by the number of players who tie for the lead.

For example, let's say you have a ticket that pays out $550 for Harry Kane to be the top goal scorer. If he finishes tied with one other player, that bet would now pay $225 ($500 / 2). If he finishes tied with two other players, the bet would pay out $183.33 ($550 / 3).

How to read top goal scorer odds

The above odds for top goal scorer are in American format. All odds with a positive sign (+) indicate the amount you will win for every $100 wagered. For example, a $100 bet on Harry Kane at +550 would profit $550. And a $100 bet on Kai Havertz at +3,300 would profit $3,300.

As the tournament progresses, you might see a favorite emerge with negative (-) odds. This means that you would need to wager the amount of the odds to win $100. So if Kylian Mbappé drops to -130 later in the tournament, you'd need to wager $130 to win $100.
