My Ipswich vs Nottingham Forest top pick: Nottingham Forest to win (43% probability)
Ipswich’s attacking brand of soccer is entertaining, but it’s a high-risk strategy, which is why they’ve conceded 15 goals this season, the second-most of any team.
I’m particularly concerned given they’re facing Oliver Glasner’s Nottingham Forest, a team poised for positive regression. They sit 19th in the table, but they should be far higher.
Defensively, they’re tight and compact and have allowed the fewest goals of any team in the bottom half of the Premier League, as we saw when Arsenal needed a late goal to secure the win last weekend.
Furthering my confidence is Forest’s lack of finishing in front of goal. They’ve scored just five times in seven games, fewer than anyone else in the division, but they are the biggest xG underachievers in the league, having scored 7.99 fewer goals than expected.
Morgan Gibbs-White’s creativity will help Forest exploit the gaps left between Ipswich’s midfield and defense when the hosts push too far forward.
My Ipswich vs Nottingham Forest Over/Under pick: Under 2.5 goals (46% probability)
As much as I’m bullish on Forest, this is a team that isn’t prolific in front of goal.
Igor Jesus is set to miss out, meaning Liam Delap will continue up front against his old team. The young English striker has just one goal this season from 18 shots.
Both teams usually utilize their wide players well, but the excellent Daniel Munoz and Neco Williams will need to balance their wingback work with defensive duties, especially with Leif Davis being so integral to Ipswich’s attack, as he’s shown with three goal contributions this term.
This is the sort of home game Ipswich need to win to stay in the Premier League, while Glasner is already on the hot seat at Forest. Neither team is likely to go gung-ho early, which will lead to a low-scoring encounter.
