The Lions will feast on a banged-up Panthers squad in this "Battle of the Big Cats" on Sunday Night Football. Find out why Jason Logan likes Detroit but also this Carolina weapon with his best NFL picks.

The last time the Carolina Panthers got a slot on Sunday Night Football we were just three movies into the “Kung Fu Panda” saga and couldn’t turn the radio on without hearing Justin Bieber’s “Sorry”.

Here we are 10 years later, with the Panthers hosting the Detroit Lions on SNF and Bieber’s bop still living rent free in our heads. Carolina is a 3.5-point home underdog in Week 4 and it's "missing more than just one body" with a long list of injuries.

My Lions vs. Panthers predictions size up this rare prime-time pairing, giving you my best NFL picks for the Sunday finale on Oct. 4.

 TOP Pick
Lions vs Panthers prediction: Lions -3.5

The Carolina Panthers might be bringing a spork to a gun fight on Sunday night.

Injuries have shredded the home team’s depth chart ahead of Week 4, with bodies missing at running back, receiver, and offensive line.

The Detroit Lions feel Carolina’s pain, with a rash of ailments thinning out the secondary. Detroit, however, has the offensive hutzpah to counter those shortcomings with scoring and just put in its best showing under new coordinator Drew Petzing.

Defensively, the Lions are trying to plant quarterbacks on their ass before they can slice up a shaky secondary. Detroit blitzes at the sixth highest rate and ranks second with a dozen sacks in the first three games.

Carolina could be without two starting offensive linemen for a unit still missing Taylor Moton and Brady Christensen. They’re already 25th in pass block win rate at ESPN and allowing the second highest rate of pressure on QB Bryce Young, who's dealing with a bum knee.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The Panthers run into this Lions offense at the worst possible time. Carolina is also without its top two CBs Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson and faces a Detroit attack that ranked No. 2 in success rate per dropback in Week 3.

Lions vs Panthers combo

The Lions can take advantage of the Panthers’ laundry list of ailments on both sides of the ball. Carolina’s secondary can’t keep up with Jared Goff and all his weapons while the Panthers poor pass protection won’t keep Young upright.

Sione Vaki is behind Jahmyr Gibbs but with the Lions trying to limit their star’s usage, Vaki saw his snaps surge in Week 3. Carolina has been awful against the run and Vaki could get goal line carries in garbage time on SNF, providing a great return if he scores a touchdown.

Chuba Hubbard will see more involvement as a receiver in Week 4, much like he did last Sunday. Injuries to the Carolina WR corps and Chuba being used as a checkdown when the Lions’ blitz gets loose has my projections trending toward 20 yards for the Panthers RB.

Lions vs Panthers combo

  • Lions -3.5
  • Sione Vaki touchdown
  • Chuba Hubbard 15+ receiving yards

Lions vs Panthers touchdown scorer: Sione Vaki

Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs has the highest odds of scoring a touchdown than anyone in Week 4. Anytime I see percentages like this, I start to look at the RB2 and wonder if they could get some goal line love as well.

Behind Gibbs is third-year RB Sione Vaki, who saw his snap share spike to 31% in Week 2.

Head coach Dan Campbell praised Vaki after the win against New York and we have seen him get a red-zone carry already this season. Detroit is trying to be smart about Gibbs’ wear and tear, which gives Vaki garbage time gains on SNF.

The Panthers have been pushed around on the ground, giving up the most rushing yards to RBs through three games. Carolina also collapses in the red zone, allowing foes to score on a league-high 85.7% trips inside the 20-yard line, with six rushing TDs against.
