Q&A with Jason

What sport do you have the most success betting on?

While I handicap just about every sport under the sun, I have my highest ROI on UFC, college basketball and CFL betting. Getting ahead of line movement is key in those sports and doing your homework on obscure fighters in MMA, smaller schools in the NCAA, and roster turnover in the CFL can be very profitable.

What’s the best time for betting: Super Bowl or March Madness?

The Big Game is great, but nothing beats the first two days of the NCAA Tournament, especially now that college hoops odds have expanded into player props over the past seven years.

Who has been your biggest mentors during your career at Covers?

Just like betting, you need to get info from multiple sources. I would say the late, great handicapper David Malinsky, legendary bookmaker Johnny Avello, and even my colleagues - like Jon Metler and Josh Inglis - have helped make me a smarter bettor over the past 20 years.

What’s your best advice for new sports bettors?

Handicapping isn't a one size fits all process. The impact and importance of information varies from bet to bet. Treat each wager different than the last.

Jason's top Covers tip

I don’t bet a lot of baseball, but Covers has some extremely valuable sources of info. Weather/wind direction as well as umpire stats are very much underrated in terms of capping MLB totals.

Jason's memories

🚀 Big wins

Justin Timberlake covering Prince’s “I Would Die For You” during the Super Bowl LII halftime show, cashing in at +140. I’m a huge Prince fan and it was one of the rare Super Bowl bets I won that day.

😭 Bad beat

Game 5 of Pacers-Nets in the 2002 NBA Playoffs. I needed Pacers +5 to close out a big parlay, but Reggie Miller kept forcing overtimes – buzzer-beating 3-pointer that shouldn’t have counted and a damn dunk – and Indiana ended up losing by 11 points in double OT anyways.

Kyle LaRusic joined Covers in 2020 with a Holland College diploma in Journalism and a Mount Saint Vincent Degree in Public Relations. Stints at Amherst News and the Cape Breton Post helped sharpen his skills in a newsroom setting, while working for MSVU and Dalhousies athletic departments landed Kyle in his comfort zone. Kyle has been an avid bettor for over five years, starting with just one Sports Interaction account before discovering both the beauty and importance of price shopping. bet365 and Pinnacle are his go to books, but accounts at 10+ sportsbooks give him an array of options. Rusty will bet on anything under the sun as long as theres value and good reasoning behind it, but NHL and NFL are his two favorite leagues to watch and wager on especially with friends. Kyles biggest tip for any bettor is simple: gamble responsibly. Only bet what youre willing to lose and make sure to install a proper bankroll method to keep track of your ROI. If youre still dwelling on the amount you lost the next day, its time to decrease your spending.
