Don't overlook the Carolina Panthers, who will look to capitalize on home-field advantage and pull off a primetime upset.

The Carolina Panthers are set to play host to the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football.

My Lions vs. Panthers moneyline pick backs Carolina as a home underdog, as its superior net efficiency makes the 38% probability more appealing than its 1-2 record suggests.

Find out more in my NFL picks for Oct. 4, with kickoff set for 8:20 p.m. ET from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

The case for the favorite moneyline

The Detroit Lions are 14-3 straight-up as road favorites under head coach Dan Campbell, returning a +46.0% ROI.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers rank 26th in points allowed per game and will be without both starting cornerbacks against a Detroit offense that has scored 31 points in each of its three games this season.

The case for the underdog moneyline

Carolina is better than its 1-2 record suggests. The Panthers rank seventh in net yards per play and fifth in net early-down EPA per play, ranking ahead of the Lions in both categories.

Early-down net efficiency is my favorite football stat because it's predictive, with the entire playbook available on first and second downs.

What are prediction markets?

A prediction market allows you to buy and sell shares on the outcome of a future event. Prediction markets are exchange-traded markets. Most prediction market apps allow users to "buy an outcome" for between 1 cent and $1.

The $1.00 rule: The foundation of prediction markets

The difference between sportsbook and prediction market pricing isn't actually that difficult. In fact, you can make a compelling case that American odds are more challenging for beginners to understand than prediction markets and their $1.00 foundation.

Unlike a traditional bet where you wager a specific amount to win a profit, NFL prediction markets operate on a binary contract system.

  • The Winning Side: Always settles at $1.00
  • The Losing Side: Always settles at $0.00

The price of a "Yes" contract is directly related to the aggregate belief about the probability that the event will occur. For example, if a contract for the Chicago Bears to beat the Detroit Lions is trading at $0.51, the market believes they have a 51% chance of victory.
