North Carolina's sluggish offense will catch up with it in a road game against arch-rival Duke on Saturday.

Duke is a slight favorite hosting rival North Carolina at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The Tar Heels haven't shown me enough offensively to trust this improving team quite yet, and my North Carolina vs. Duke prediction is backing the Blue Devils to cover.

Read on to see all of my free college football picks ahead of this 3:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPN2.

 TOP PICK
Who will win North Carolina vs Duke: Duke -2.5

I like Duke at -3.5 or better.

The North Carolina Tar Heels have faced some serious competition to start the season, but that doesn't excuse their poor offensive numbers. The Tar Heels are averaging 23.4 points and just 330.4 yards of offense per game. They rank a dismal 74th nationally, averaging 5.9 yards per play.

The Duke Blue Devils suffered a narrow road loss last weekend, their first defeat of the season and their first failure to cover the spread. Opponents are scoring just 14.4 ppg against Duke, which hasn't lost at home since last November.

North Carolina doesn't have enough juice to win this rivalry game on the road.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The Tar Heels rank 102nd nationally in offensive EPA per play (-0.03), and 90th or worse in EPA for both their passing and running games.

North Carolina vs Duke Over/Under pick: Over 46.5

The competitive games these teams have played this season have tended to be higher-scoring than expected. Duke has hit the Over in three of its last four games, including matchups against Georgia Tech and  Illinois, while North Carolina has cleared this total against both Notre Dame and Clemson.

Blue Devils quarterback Walker Eget has been efficient this season, throwing for seven touchdowns against just one interception, while Duke's running game has contributed 1,133 yards on the ground. That balanced offensive success will continue against a Tar Heels defense that ranks 50th in adjusted EPA allowed per play.

I'm backing the Over at up to 55% if the total stays at 47.5 or lower.

North Carolina vs Duke combo

Along with my spread and total picks, I'm also taking Duke to win the first half outright to complete a three-leg combo for this game. While North Carolina has clearly improved this season, this should still be a relatively straightforward home win for the Blue Devils, with Duke taking a halftime lead against its biggest rivals.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
