Two upstart Big Ten programs with rolling momentum collide at the Rose Bowl in Week 7 as UCLA hosts Wisconsin.
My Wisconsin vs. UCLA prediction and college football picks see the Badgers as an undervalued asset in this low-scoring contest.
Kickoff is on NBC at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 17.
TOP PICK
Who will win Wisconsin vs UCLA: Wisconsin +2.5
I'm on Wisconsin at any underdog price.
UCLA has garnered many of the headlines for its upstart 5-0 beginning under Bob Chesney, but Wisconsin (4-1, with its sole loss coming to Notre Dame) has also been very impressive.
The Bruins could struggle offensively going forward now that Nico Iamaleava is out for the season. Ty Dieffenbach had a 9:9 TD-to-INT ratio at Cal Poly last season, so this will be a one-dimensional unit.
Wisconsin's defense is tremendous, allowing 4.1 yards per play, and the offense has generated the second-most explosive plays in the nation.

Wisconsin vs UCLA Over/Under pick: Under 43.5
Neither team is in a hurry offensively. Wisconsin ranks 99th in seconds between snaps (27.8) while UCLA is even slower at 125th (29.4).
Wisconsin doesn't typically rely on methodical drives, preferring to hit big runs on the ground (first nationally in rushing explosiveness). UCLA bottles those up (seventh in rushing explosiveness allowed) and is more susceptible to chunk gains through the air (128th), though passing explosiveness is less of a strength for Wisconsin (44th).
The Badgers' salty defense (ninth in EPA per play) is already the best unit on the field, and now it gets to feast against a backup quarterback who had underwhelming statistics at the FCS level.
Wisconsin vs UCLA prop: Defense/Special Teams touchdown
Both quarterbacks are turnover-prone, and both defenses are potent, creating the recipe for a defensive touchdown.
Colton Joseph has thrown 15 interceptions since the start of last season, and UCLA's defense is tied for the national lead in turnovers forced (19).
Dieffenbach had 11 turnover-worthy passes on just 163 attempts at Cal Poly, and Wisconsin's secondary (third in EPA per play) will have him bottled up.
Wisconsin vs UCLA combo
This will be a sluggish contest in which neither team pushes the tempo. Both teams have stronger defenses than offenses, and Wisconsin's stop unit will thrive from the jump against a backup quarterback.
