In the first Top 25 matchup of Week 3, Houston heads west to Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock to take on Texas Tech under the Friday night lights at 8 p.m. ET (FOX).
The Red Raiders are a 7.5-point favorite on Sept. 18, and my Houston vs. Texas Tech prediction and college football picks are backing Joey McGuire's offensive line and front seven to carry his program to a decisive win.
TOP PICK
Who will win Houston vs Texas Tech: Texas Tech -7.5
Though we're just two games into the season, Houston and Texas Tech have a common opponent that both struggled against. Oregon State covered as a more than 20-point underdog against both teams, but the Red Raiders had the tougher task of playing the Beavers on the road in the pouring rain.
The key to a decisive win against Houston will be Tech's trench play. The Red Raiders' defense sits fourth nationally in early-down EPA per play and 11th overall by SP+, thanks to one of the best front sevens in the country.
Pressure has also been a problem for Cougars quarterback Conner Weigman, who ranked in the top 20 in the P4 in turnover-worthy play rate last season (3.9%) and posted just a 72.2% adjusted completion rate.
I like Tech to cover up to -8.5, especially if Terrence Carter Jr. and Trey White play.

Houston vs Texas Tech Over/Under pick: Over 52.5
The Red Raiders should be able to pressure a Houston defense that's ranked just 44th on defense by SP+, 81st in EPA per pass, and 96th in early-down EPA per play. The Cougars gave up 376 passing yards to Oregon State's Braden Atkinson in his first FBS start in Week 1.
Tech, though, has had defensive struggles of its own, specifically in the secondary. It gave up 413 passing yards to Atkinson last week, and Houston's offensive efficiency should help it score.
Houston's offense is currently 11th in the country in third/fourth down success (69.2%), while Texas Tech's defense is 112th in third/fourth down success on defense (60%).
There should be a healthy amount of scoring in this game, with Tech prevailing 33-24.
Houston vs Texas Tech prop: Texas Tech team total Over 31.5
While Will Hammond has been inconsistent in his first two games since returning from a torn ACL, Texas Tech's offense has still had bright moments thanks to one of the best offensive lines in the country and a deep running back room.
The Red Raiders are 23rd nationally in EPA per play and could be a problem for a Houston defense that's struggled against the pass. And though Hammond hasn't put up major numbers, he has Texas Tech sitting 15th in third/fourth down success on offense (66.7%).
If the running back trio of Cameron Dickey, J'Koby Williams, and Quinten Joyner get going, the Cougars might need to stack the box, which will open up the RPO game for Hammond.
Houston vs Texas Tech combo
Neither team was as impressive as expected against Oregon State, but that says more about the Beavers than it does about Texas Tech and Houston.
However, the Cougars' defensive woes are more concerning given their lack of returning production. Houston is just 44th in returning defensive production, while Texas Tech is 17th and has a front seven loaded with NFL talent.
An early lead for the Red Raiders will allow Shiel Wood's defense to pin its ears back and pressure Weigman into mistakes. If that happens, Tech can win big at home.
