St. John’s has stormed into the Sweet 16 with its defense, but let’s not forget about Duke. The Blue Devils are the perfect counter, and Jason Logan is leaning Under on the Johnnies’ offensive output.

Are you a fan of professional wrestling? If so, you’ll enjoy Friday’s Sweet 16 “slobberknocker” between the Duke Blue Devils and St. John’s Red Storm.

This East Region run-in reminds me of a battle of badasses way back at Wrestlemania XI, when King Kong Bundy took on the Undertaker. Much like those two behemoths, these teams don’t budge, and my Duke vs. St. John’s predictions see points being at a premium in D.C.

Our March Madness picks for March 27 are going low on the Red Storm’s team total.

St. John’s vs Duke best bet: St. John’s team total Under 67.5 (-125)

As stifling as St. John’s pressure is, let’s not forget who’s No. 1 in defense.

Duke is just as stingy and provides a perfect counter to what makes the Johnnies go.

The Blue Devils throw up roadblocks on transition attacks and suck teams into slower paces, living life in the halfcourt — which is not a strength of the Red Storm.

St. John’s shot surprisingly well from deep in the first week, but that heat will quickly cool, especially against Duke’s perimeter patrol.

Offensively, the Blue Devils are reluctant to run and turn down the tempo, sapping seconds off the shot clock, which limits touches for the Johnnies.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Duke limits opponents’ offensive rebounds and is No. 2 in defensive FT rate, which takes away two areas of offense for St. John’s. The Red Storm depend on second-chance points and getting to the free-throw line.

St. John’s vs Duke same-game parlay

When the smoke settles in the nation’s capital, the Blue Devils will be left standing. Duke has more ways to win than the Red Storm and can match their toughness, size, and athleticism.

Patrick Ngongba made his return to the lineup in the win over TCU. He was limited to 13 minutes, but his impact as a passer was on full display with four assists. Against the Johnnies, he’ll work out of the high post to space the interior defense, looking for dump-downs and kickouts.

Our Big Dance SGP: Devil is in the Details

Game models have Duke favored by as much as 9 points in what’s expected to be an absolute grind of a Sweet 16 matchup.

Given the Blue Devils' interior defense and pace of play, Dillion Mitchell won’t be able to get to the rim or pick up points from the foul line.
