The traditional First Four has been replaced by a 12-game Opening Round featuring 24 teams—combining the lowest automatic qualifiers and at-large selections—with winners advancing to join the top seeds in the Round of 64.
Automatic bids decrease from 56 to 52 across conferences, while at-large invitations expand from 37 to 45, offering extra lifeline spots for power-conference bubble squads and deserving mid-majors.
