Offensive fireworks shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone when the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs collide, but even these potent lineups will have a hard time matching yesterday’s runfest as they square off again this afternoon.
The series opener ended in a wild 13-11 victory for Chicago, who still won even after allowing 10 runs in the eighth inning.
However, my Diamondbacks vs. Cubs predictions expect Arizona to hit back today.
Take a closer look at my MLB picks for Saturday, April 19.
Diamondbacks vs Cubs prediction
My Diamondbacks vs Cubs best bet: Diamondbacks Over 3.5 runs (-125 at Caesars)
Slice the numbers any way you want.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are off to a whirlwind start at the plate, and there’s no reason to think the onslaught will fizzle out in today’s matchup with the Chicago Cubs.
The D-backs rank second in the league in OPS (.799), joint sixth in home runs (28), and joint third in runs (104). They’re also in the Top 10 for slugging and batting average, and they’ve scored 5+ runs in six straight games.
That makes the Over on 3.5 Arizona runs one of the tastier props on the board here, with Torey Lovullo’s men cashing the Team Total Over in 13 of their past 19 matchups.
A relentless late assault seemed to have flipped the script yesterday as the visitors tore into the Chicago relievers, only for their own bullpen to crater.
But the clutch hits continue to come from all over the lineup, led by Corbin Carroll and Josh Naylor, and the D-backs got 11 hits from the top five spots in the order yesterday.
That could spell trouble for Cubs starter Ben Brown.
Though he stifled the Los Angeles Dodgers’ bats last weekend, he’s got a 6.00 ERA across his past five outings, and this is just his second year in the big leagues.
The hosts’ bullpen is also coming off a shaky effort in the series opener.
While yesterday’s avalanche of runs was an anomaly in most senses, the D-backs have shown they can score in bunches this year, including a 5-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth to stun the Milwaukee Brewers last Sunday.
So there’s potential for one big inning to make this Over a formality.
Arizona has piled up 6+ runs in four of its last five meetings with Chicago, and I’m putting my faith in one of MLB’s hottest offenses.
Diamondbacks vs Cubs same-game parlay (SGP)
An 11-run effort on 15 hits wasn’t enough for Arizona to escape with a win yesterday, but I see Zac Gallen shaking off some inconsistent form and bringing his best stuff.
He’s had the upper hand in past battles with Seiya Suzuki, Justin Turner, Dansby Swanson, and Ian Happ, and the visitors have won two of Gallen’s last three outings.
Though the D-backs’ 12-8 mark leaves them fourth in the ultra-competitive NL West, they’ve won seven of their last nine contests, and I like stacking the moneyline with a Team Total Over for this marquee matchup.
Arizona is 49-35 in its last 84 road games, while Chicago is 44-40 in its past 84 home contests.
Meanwhile, Kyle Tucker’s Cubs career is off to a predictably strong start.
The former Houston Astro has posted a .301 batting average so far and sits fourth in the majors with 19 RBIs. I see him bumping up his stats this afternoon.
Tucker has a 5-for-15 record against Gallen, including two doubles, and he did serious damage yesterday at Wrigley Field with a single, a triple and the late go-ahead homer.
The Over on 1.5 total bases feels like a value pick to round out my SGP.
