Blue Jays Picks, Predictions & Best Bets vs the Athletics for May 29

Ernie Clement doesn't always pack much thump with his bat, but he's particularly adept at hitting left-handed pitching. He'll get his shot to do damage as the Blue Jays face A's southpaw Jacob Lopez.

We have a busy betting slate in Major League Baseball tonight, including the series opener between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Athletics.

I’m expecting a productive night at the plate for Ernie Clement with the A’s lefty Jacob Lopez on the hill.

Blue Jays predictions for May 29

Today’s Blue Jays best bet: Ern, baby, Ern

Pick (-138 at BetVictor)

The A's are sending left-handed starter Jacob Lopez to the mound tonight for just his third start of the season and fifth of his major league career.

He’s had a fairly good start to his 2025 campaign, posting a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings split between relief work and two prior starts. He had impressive numbers as a starter in Triple-A as well, sporting a 2.33 ERA, and striking out 38 batters in 27 innings.

However, before this season, he had a career 4.76 ERA through 22 major-league innings split between two seasons.

The Toronto Blue Jays are a middle-of-the-pack offense when it comes to attacking left-handed pitchers, ranking 12th in the majors with a .246 batting average. However, the Jays do seem to have one specialist who’s been dominant against lefty pitching this season: Ernie Clement

The Jays' utility infielder has a team-high 52 at-bats against lefties this year and is hitting .341 with a .957 OPS.

He’s also more likely to hit for power against left-handers as six of his seven extra-base hits have come against southpaws, despite only 29% of his at-bats being against them this season.

Overall, the A's boast one of the worst pitching staffs in all of baseball with a team ERA of 5.40 that has given up the second-most extra-base hits in the majors.

So, whether Lopez pitches deep or not, the Jays should get the ball in play quite often, and I expect Clement, specifically, to do some damage with a lefty on the mound.

Today’s Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)

Ernie Clement Over 1.0 total bases

Alejandro Kirk Over 0.5 singles

Jose Berrios Over 17.5 outs

I’ll continue to take lefty mashers in tonight's matchup and roll with Alejandro Kirk to record a single.

He’s been a singles machine this season, hitting at least one in five consecutive outings. He also has a .419 average against the A’s current pitching staff and is hitting .333 against lefties to go along with his 90th-percentile expected batting average this season, per Baseball Savant.

For the final leg of our SGP, I’ll take Jose Berrios to go Over 17.5 outs. Berrios is an innings-eater who has hit this mark in four of his last five starts. He’s also gone six or more innings in five straight outings against the A’s as their lineup is hitting just .179 with a .508 OPS against the Jays starter.
