Roughriders 39, Eskimos 18: Kory Sheets ran for 131 yards and one touchdown as visiting Saskatchewan breezed past Edmonton to open its season with its third win in 13 years at Commonwealth Stadium.
Darian Durant went 14-for-22 for 171 yards and three touchdowns in three quarters for the Roughriders, who led 14-0 after the first and did not look back. Chris Getzlaf caught three passes for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Taj Smith and Scott McHenry also had receiving scores.
Mike Reilly was 17-for-35 with 259 passing yards and three interceptions in his debut as the Eskimos' starter. Reilly found Fred Stamps (six receptions, 125 yards) for a touchdown with 6:35 remaining in the game.
Renauld Williams returned an interception for a touchdown on the final play of the first half to give Saskatchewan a 22-1 advantage. After Getzlaf extended the lead early in the third quarter, Edmonton return man John White fumbled the ensuing kickoff and McHenry scored two plays later.
With the Roughriders leading by 30 points, backup quarterback Drew Willy replaced Durant at the end of the third quarter and completed two passes for 38 yards.
GAME NOTEBOOK: CFL all-time receiving leader Geroy Simon, acquired by Saskatchewan in the off-season, missed the game with a leg injury. … Edmonton scored 422 points last year - the lowest total in the West Division. … Roughriders LB Diamond Ferri intercepted a long toss by Reilly late in the third quarter and returned it 37 yards before he was hit hard by OT Matthew O’Donnell. Ferri remained on the turf for several moments after the hit and did not return to the game.
