The Montreal Alouettes added to their Grey Cup credentials in Week 1 with a 28-10 win over the Toronto Argos, and that should be a powerful springboard as they face the Ottawa Redblacks on Friday night.

My Alouettes vs Redblacks pick: Alouettes -3.5 (-125 at BET99)
We’re only a week into the 2025 CFL season, and the Ottawa Redblacks have already been hit with a double whammy, dropping their season opener to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and losing quarterback Dru Brown to a hip injury that’ll keep him out of Friday’s battle with the Montreal Alouettes.
If that wasn’t bad enough, Montreal has feasted in this matchup, winning the past eight meetings against Ottawa — six of those by a margin of 7+ points. The Als have also made themselves at home at TD Place, picking up 10 victories in a row in the Redblacks’ backyard. Those are ominous trends for the hosts.
Montreal opened as a slight underdog for this Week 2 showdown, but the line shifted dramatically once Redblacks head coach Bob Dyce announced that Brown would be sidelined. It arguably called for a larger adjustment, though, and I’ll gladly lay the points with the visitors.
While the Redblacks will be leaning on backup Matt Shiltz under center and tinkering with the playbook, the Als have no such concerns. QB Davis Alexander has posted a 5-0 record as a starter, and he completed 19 of his 26 passes in Week 1.
Montreal ran for 163 yards that night, and we should get another balanced gameplan here. It’s worth noting that the visitors scored 6+ points in each quarter against the Argos, hinting at an offense that’s gelling nicely so early in the season.
I’m banking on the Alouettes’ defense being one of the key themes, too. They picked off Toronto QB Nick Arbuckle twice last Friday, and they’ve got the difference-makers to slow down a Redblacks offense that racked up 413 receiving yards in Week 1.
Ottawa is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 games, and I don’t see the hosts improving that mark on Friday with a whole string of factors lined up against them.

If both of these offenses were humming in top gear, the Over would be an attractive pick. But it’s fair to wonder whether Ottawa can consistently sustain drives against a Grey Cup-caliber defense.
It’ll surely take some time for Shiltz to get a rhythm here — he only attempted 62 passes last season, completing 34 of them — and that could trigger a low first-half total, especially if the Redblacks take a cautious approach.
The trends also suggest the defenses will be on top. The Under is 4-1 in the past five meetings between these teams, including a 19-12 scoreline in their last matchup back in October, and it’s also 6-4 in Montreal’s last 10 outings. You have to rewind to August 2023 for the last time the Redblacks scored more than 21 points in this fixture.
The Als piled up 28 points in Week 1 yet still comfortably cashed the Under, and it would be no surprise to see a similar story at TD Place on Friday.
