Seahawks vs Packers prediction
Seahawks vs Packers Best bet: Seahawks +3 (-105)
The talk around the joint practice between the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers was mainly about the huge fight that broke out, and in truth, we’re unlikely to find quite as much aggression in this game, with a number of players missing out.
The home side already knew that Jordan Love was missing following the minor procedure on his thumb, but we don’t really know much else about who we’re going to be seeing and for how long on Sunday.
Matt LaFleur has confirmed that he’d like to play some starters, but he hasn’t committed to mentioning names, the number of starters, or even for how long they’ll be on the field. In reality, it’s unlikely to be for that long, even if we do see many first-string Packers on the field.
At quarterback, we’re presumably going to see Malik Willis get the start, before giving way to Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma.
While the Packers are 1-1 so far this preseason, it’s notable that this offense has yet to have a single receiving touchdown. That doesn’t really bode well for any of the QBs involved, with all four of the team's touchdowns coming from the ground game, with Clifford rushing for one of those.
On the Seattle sideline, we’re going to see both Sam Darnold and Drew Lock, with the team opting to give rookie Jalen Milroe the entire game. We saw Darnold very briefly last week against the Chiefs, but it was Lock who ran the show, throwing two of his three preseason touchdown passes in that win.
It’s smart to wrap up Darnold ahead of the season start, and in truth, the coaching staff is now fully aware of Lock in terms of his strengths and weaknesses. So it makes sense to take a closer look at Milroe.
The former Alabama quarterback completed nine of 15 passes and has avoided turnovers, but he’s also not thrown a touchdown pass.
However, whilst on the field, he’s led a touchdown scoring drive in each game. What’s most impressive is that he did that in both cases with the third-string.
We know that starters won’t play for the Seahawks here, but the chance for Milroe to play with the second-string is an exciting one, and we’ll get a good look at how he’s shaping up in his rookie season.
Usually, seeing the third-string quarterback playing would lead us to back the Packers, but an extended period on the field should allow him to get some consistency. Given the struggles of the Packers’ QBs this preseason, we can’t be too worried about the starters getting limited time on the field.
Back the Seahawks to cover here.
