The New York Giants and Washington Commanders will battle in an NFC East tilt at Northwest Stadium on Sunday, September 7

Washington took both meetings last season, and my top Giants vs. Commanders predictions and NFL picks are calling for the divisional foes to have another close contest in Week 1.

Giants vs Commanders prediction

Giants vs Commanders Best bet: Theo Johnson Over 22.5 receiving yards (-118)

New York Giants tight end Theo Johnson isn’t on the Week 1 injury report and is set to build on his sneaky good rookie season that ended prematurely with a Lisfranc injury in his foot in Week 13.

Johnson became a reliable option in the New York passing attack with 26 receptions — on 35 targets — for 294 yards and a touchdown across his final eight games before the injury.

I also particularly value the game-to-game consistency. Johnson hauled in at least three receptions and 30 receiving yards in seven of those eight games.

Additionally, the Giants don’t have a who’s who of pass catchers on the roster, and No. 1 wide receiver Malik Nabers has been nursing injuries throughout training camp and missed Friday’s practice with back tightness.

The Washington Commanders were also soft against tight ends in 2024 while allowing an above-average 7.7 yards per target to the position, and for what it’s worth, Johnson caught three of six targets for 51 yards and a score in Week 9 against the Commanders.

Giants vs Commanders same-game parlay

A lot went right for the Commanders last season, and I’m not expecting them to sneak up on anyone in 2025. New York improved on both sides of the ball this offseason, and I’m expecting the pass rush to keep the Washington offense just off balance enough to keep this Week 1 tilt within a one-possession finish.

The best path to keeping this game close for the Giants is not letting it turn into a shootout, so I expect head coach Brian Daboll to try to shorten the game and use the entire 40-second play clock.

Plus, I don’t think the Giants' offense is going to hit the ground running at full speed in a road divisional game Sunday.

Giants vs Commanders 3-leg SGP

  • Theo Johnson Over 23.5 receiving yards
  • Under 45.5
  • Giants +6.5

Our big-ticket SGP: Theo leads the charge

  • Commanders rookie rusher Jacory Croskey-Merritt is positioned to complement veteran Austin Ekeler in the backfield, and I think Croskey-Merritt is the better red-zone option on the ground for Washington.
