Two of the best teams in the American Conference take their contrasting styles to the field on Thursday night, with Tulsa's QB situation the biggest focus ahead of the matchup.

Tulsa looks to beat North Texas for the first time in over a decade tonight at 9 p.m. ET (ESPN), when the two American Conference foes meet at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.

The Golden Hurricane are 1.5-point home favorites, and my North Texas vs. Tulsa prediction and college football picks expect Tre Lamb's team to win a low-scoring game on Thursday, Oct. 1.

Who will win North Texas vs Tulsa: Tulsa moneyline

With Tulsa QB Baylor Hayes set to return after missing the past two games, the Golden Hurricanes are in good shape at home. While Hayes's return is key, I like Tulsa to win because of the defense (I would also take the Golden Hurricane to cover up to -1.5, but prefer the outright win).

Tulsa's defense is among the best in the Group of Six, ranking 43rd in net EPA per play and 53rd in defensive success rate (43.2%).

This Golden Hurricane defense held Oklahoma State to just 10 points and should cause problems for a North Texas offense that, in its three non-Power Four games, played defenses with an average SP+ ranking of 186th. Tulsa is ranked 60th.

 TOP PICK
North Texas vs Tulsa Over/Under pick: Under 57.5

Tulsa is one of the best Under teams in the country this season because of its defense and a run-first offense that leans on a ball-control approach.

The Golden Hurricane are 4-0 to the Under and have hit it by an average of more than 15 points per game, which is why I like the Under at 55.5 or better.

The Golden Hurricane have held three of four opponents to 17 or fewer points, and their defense is top 65 nationally in both pass success (44.2%) and rush success (41.8%). As for North Texas' defense, it ranks top five in the American in havoc rate (15%).

With Hayes returning from injury, Tulsa's passing game could be limited. Plus, weather could be a factor, with rain throughout the day.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Tulsa's run-first offense has helped it hit the Under this season. The Golden Hurricanes are averaging just 63.7 plays per game, 104th most in the country.

North Texas vs Tulsa combo

Wet conditions should help Tulsa's defense win a low-scoring game. The Golden Hurricane are 2-0 at home, hitting the Under in both matchups and winning by double digits both times.

While North Texas plays a fast-paced, offense-first style of football, the Mean Green haven't seen a defense this good since Indiana in Week 1 (16 points).

Obviously, the Golden Hurricane aren't on the Hoosiers' level, but they know how to muck up a game. And UNT is 0-2 ATS on the road this season.

North Texas vs Tulsa combo

  • Tulsa moneyline
  • Under 57.5
  • First half Under 28.5

North Texas vs Tulsa prop: North Texas team total Under 28.5

Tulsa has one of the best front sevens in the Group of Six, racking up 65 pressures through four games. Both Thomas Davis (15) and Kyran Duhon (13) rank in the top three in pressures in the American and should make Tayven Jackson uncomfortable.

Jackson has only been pressured 29 times this season, with Texas State getting by far the most pressure against him (13). In that loss to the Bobcats, Jackson accounted for a season-high three turnover-worthy plays.

If Tulsa can get to him, North Texas' offense will get out of rhythm. However, I only like the Mean Green's Under on 28.5 or better.
