An ACC clash kicks off Friday night in Blacksburg, with Geoff Clark targeting the Hokies against the spread, a lower-scoring matchup, and a first-half edge at Lane Stadium.

Virginia Tech are 3.5-point home favorites for Friday night’s ACC clash against Pittsburgh, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET at Lane Stadium.

My Pittsburgh vs. Virginia Tech prediction backs the home team on Oct. 2, with James Franklin’s veteran roster and Pitt’s first road test shaping the matchup.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Pittsburgh vs Virginia Tech: Virginia Tech -3.5

Virginia Tech is tradable up to -5.5, as I trust first-year head coach James Franklin more than Pittsburgh HC Pat Narduzzi.

Franklin posted six 10-win seasons at Penn State and owns a 68.8% career winning percentage, compared to just one and a 57.9% mark for Narduzzi.

Per ESPN's Bill Connelly, the Hokies also ranked fourth nationally in returning production entering this season.

This is Pitt's first road game, and Panthers quarterback Mason Heintschel has yet to throw a touchdown against a Power 4 opponent. Lane Stadium will be rocking, literally, when the Hokies run out to the field to Metallica's Enter Sandman.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The prediction market is 10-3 (+6.09 units) when it disagrees with ESPN's FPI. That's the case again this week, with the market favoring Virginia Tech while FPI gives Pittsburgh the higher win probability.

Pittsburgh vs Virginia Tech Over/Under pick: Under 54.5

I'm seeing most of the action on the Over despite the total moving down from its opener. I'm following that market signal, especially with 55 being a key total in college football.

According to GameOnPaper.com, Virginia Tech's defense ranks in the 93rd percentile nationally in average third-down distance, while Pitt sits in the 97th.

Points will be at a premium, and the Under is playable to 52.5.

Pittsburgh vs Virginia Tech combo

VT's experience and the Lane Stadium crowd will bother Pitt early, while both defenses should limit explosive plays.

The Panthers rank in the 31st percentile in rushing explosiveness and the 27th percentile in passing explosiveness.

Long third downs will lead to stalled drives and plenty of punts, even if Pitt is forced into a pass-heavy game script while playing from behind.
