Penn State gets a prime bounce-back spot Friday night, laying 2.5 points on the road at Ryan Field after coughing up a late lead to Wisconsin.

Although Northwestern nearly shocked Indiana, my Penn State vs. Northwestern prediction and college football picks lean on the Nittany Lions’ edge in the trenches.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET in Evanston, with the game airing on FOX.

 TOP PICK
Who will win Penn State vs Northwestern: Penn State -2.5

I like Penn State up to -3 as a fade of last week's results.

Penn State choked away a 10-point fourth-quarter lead in a 24-20 loss to Wisconsin, while Northwestern nearly upset reigning national champion Indiana on the road. That creates a natural let-down spot for the Wildcats, even if they are at home.

More importantly, the Nittany Lions have a better net standard-down success rate and line yards differential, according to CollegeFootballData.com.

Trench play and success rate on first and second downs are the two most predictive aspects in football handicapping, and both favor Penn State.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Northwestern's injury report is extensive: two starting defensive backs are doubtful, standout tight end Luke Dehnicke is questionable, and center Ezomo Oratokhai won't play.

Penn State vs Northwestern Over/Under pick: Under 46.5

The Under 46.5 is playable down to 45.5, with two slow-paced teams that like to pound the rock. Northwestern ranks 87th in offensive seconds per play, while Penn State is 104th, and both sit 34th in rushing rate against FBS opponents.

Meanwhile, Wildcats QB Aidan Chiles has taken too many drive-killing sacks. Northwestern enters this one 113th in sack rate allowed and 127th in yards per rush against FBS opponents.

Poor early-down rushing should put Chiles in long third-down situations, allowing Penn State to keep them from reaching the red zone.

Penn State vs Northwestern combo

I expect Penn State to punch first and control this game in the trenches, while Northwestern's weak rushing attack and sack problems should keep the scoring down.

The Nittany Lions also own the standard-down advantage, which should help them stay ahead of the chains. I'm using Penn State's moneyline instead of its full-game spread to increase the win probability and protect against Northwestern's tendency to play its best football after halftime.
